Thanks, TDR Staff
Over many years, my family & I have accumulated a fair amount of handguns, rifles & shotguns. None of us hunt & I'm the only one that has much use for a weapon (personal self-defense).

This weekend, there is a gun show in town that you can rent a table at & sell your own weapons (Crossroads of the West Gun Show). I was wondering if that is a good, safe way to sell weapons?

The other day, I spoke with a salesman at the Sportsman's store & he told me that I would be better off consigning the weapons with a gun shop, here, in town. He said that it would be safer.

Its been many years since we've sold any weapons (my Dad's collection) & I'm just looking for a convenient, safe way of accomplishing this. I'm concerned about putting an ad in the local Phoenix paper as, with all the gang's in town, I'd rather not have to deal with those folks.

Your suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Personal Firearms Sale

With the reported high numbers of firearms being sold to gangs and used for criminal purposes in your area; and/or taken into Mexico, I would propose that the best and safest way to transfer firearms would be by placing them on consignment with a licensed firearms dealer. Placing them on consignment is not only a safe method for reselling firearms, but is also the most responsible way. I have transferred several firearms that way, and the dealer charged a minimal fee to conduct the transfer ($10-20). The bonus with this method, is if there is any problem with the firearm being used for a criminal activity later in its life, you are clear of any problems.

Documentation is key to protection from liability. If you were to sell a firearm to someone who couldn't legally own it, it's a crime for them, and as long as you can show a bill of sale, you should be protected from legal prosecution. If someone were to be injured with that weapon, you could face civil litigation. As a separate topic, the firearms are your private property. You have the right to sell them as you wish in AZ. Personally, I would get a copy of their driver's license, and if they object, don't sell them to them. You have to verify age, as handguns cannot be sold to anyone under the age of 21. Chances are, if most of your firearms have been in your family's posession for over 10 years, it will impossible to trace back to you unless the purchaser names you. As far as being taken into Mexico, I'd be careful believing much of what the news media has to tell you.

A little OT.

The vast majority of guns in gangs possession in Mexico have been traced back to central america and other "rogue regimes". These guys arent using lever action and bolt action arms.

I'd stick with the gun club route. If they go on consignment, you'll make little on them. Unless youre that worried about end users.

I have had very good success with gun broker.com A local gun store offered me $30 for my S&W mod 36 I sold it near $300. on G/B.com He would not even consider my Ithaca 20 gage I got over $200, the same for a single shot 22. Would you mind PM me a list of what you have I might take some off your hands.

As Mickeyblueyes stated, GunBroker.com is probably your best bet. I have had great success there. I too would be interested in what you are selling.

THANK YOU, for all your replies. I appreciate your help. Been kind of busy here, lately, & haven't been able to read all your replies.

At this time, I do not have a list of all the firearms that I will be selling. A number of firearms belong to my 87 year old Mom. Her shooting days are pretty much over. She's in good shape but, not interested in shooting. Her hearing is so bad that, someone could break into her home & she wouldn't even hear them til it was too late. Fortunately, she's in a retirement community that if very safe.

She will have a 6" barrel Colt Python (nickel plate). 357 that was my Dad's "pride & joy". It's about as perfect as you can find one with very few rounds through it. He used to just sit in his chair & admire it while cleaning it. There is a 4" barrel Colt Daimondback . 38(blue finish) that is my Mom's & has hardly ever been fired & is perfect, also. I gave her a 2" barrel Colt . 38 that we've never shot but, it had belonged to a friend that may have never shot it. If he did, it was very little. There is a Ruger 10/22 with a scope (don't know which one but, my Dad didn't buy junk), again, with very few rounds through it.

I have a Browning High Power with a rear ramp sight that I bought used back around 1970. It came with a case, & some ammo. & I've shot it so little that I still have some of the ammo. that it came with. It's in excellent condition other than a scratch on the front of the hand grip that was there when I bought it. I believe that this weapon is a bit unusual. Haven't seem many with the ramp sight & there is a hole in the hammer.

I have my Dad's Remington 1100 shotgun that is like new, again, hardly ever used.

An old friend of mine died after leaving me with his 2 Marlin, lever action . 35 Rem. with a scope &, a 30/30. I, also, have his Colt Trooper MK-III, 4", stainless that is in very good condition (hardly used).

I haven't had the time to make a complete list but, I think there are more like a Smith&Wesson K-22 (blue) &, possibly a S-W Highway Patrolman . 357 (blue).

When I develop a complete list, with prices, I'll let you know.

At any rate, many thanks for the suggestions.

Joe,
The Diamondback and Python are high dollar. If you have the boxes and paper work it increases even more. The others that you list are also have a good value. When you get your list done, get them apraised.

For best national exposure, gunbroker.com is about your best bet.

There are other sites as well but it seems gunbroker has the better results, traffic counts, etc.

Again like others have said, the Colts are a high value collectible. Pythons can run into the thousands of dollars very quickly.
