My buddy has a 97 2500 4x4 CTD. It currently has a NV4500 and a NV241 t-case ( it's not even the HD version ). He is going to upgrade to a six speed and was wondering which t-case would be the best ( as in bullet proof ). His truck puts out about 450 HP and over 1000 # tq. What about a NP205 from a Ferd for example?

I would use what he has or if the 6spd donor truck has the HD version, use it. They are tough and have a low range of 2.72 v/s the NP205 of 2.00. I go to sled pulls all summer and the stock diesels swarm the pulls. They are allowed programmers that put out lotsa power, yet the transfer case stands up fine. Keep in mind that in 2wd high, the power is straight through, no torque or stress at all. They are also shift on the fly and of modern design.

A NV271 (mechanical) will bolt right in. It is "supposedly" stronger than the old NP205, and it has a deeper 2 wheel low. The only thing you will need to do is have the rear drive shafts shortened. The front and all the linkages all bolt up. He can also do a NV273 with the electronic shift. Let us know how it goes.

Thanks guys. The driveshaft will need to be modified anyway that's why we want to do this at the same time. I'm leaning toward the NV271. BTW the NV 273 is the one with the electric shift. David

on my prior truck (00' 2500 6spd 4x4) the stock 241 HD failed at 90K mi. I replaced it with a 271 HD with no difficulty; it's a bit larger but fits fine with a slight shortening of the driveshaft. this modification worked beautifully on a high hp/tq truck (500/1050 at the tires) for over 100k miles afterwards. I've since sold that truck but have not heard back from the buyer, and believe I would have, had there been any concerns. Recommend 271 HD

What about the speedo? Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't it driven off the t case on a 97? If we put in one from an 03 or newer where does the speedo get driven from?
