Ultimate transmission Mods

For those of you that are looking for the best "ultimate" auto trany mods for our trucks I think you should be looking into the possibility of putting a Allison in. Someone in the Earthroamer triple loc thread mentioned that somebody in Canada may be doing such conversions. I wonder what they cost? If more people started doing them the cost would probably go down. If I were looking for the "absolute best upgrade", that's where I would spend my time and energy.

When I was looking for a company to help me upgrade my trans most of my research came from reading the current and archived transmission threads here at the TDR and learning for them(you all), In doing my homework and lots of it, I chose a company that had lots of happy customers. The only negative comments I received were from another vendor and comments from all vendors must be taken with a grain of salt.

New People to the TDR, or people that don't have time to follow the threads religiously may get the impression that the only way to go is with ATS or DTT. Obviously, DTT's following is very passionate about their product and rightly so. While I dislike the way the management of DTT talks down their competition, they must have a very, very good product. People would not be so "extreme" (not a bad thing) about it if it were not so good. I believe ATS and their triple loc is also a excellent product. I'll bet 99% of the people that go with either of these companies will be very happy.

Another very good alternative is the company I went with, Goerend Bros. Transmissions. Some people may say that because Dave uses a milled stator his TC's are not as efficient at fluid coupling as some of the other stators out there. I can't really say for sure one way or the other. With all the discussion over the past several years, thread after thread about TC efficiency, drag, holding capacity etc. etc. etc. has anything been decided?

I can't believe that there aren't some common tests that TC manufacturers and remanufacturers don't know and don't do to test exactly the kinds of performance characteristics we have been trying to figure out. Remember when Steve Marshall very accurately posted the TC clutch lining surface area specs for several TC's that they remanufacture. He quickly removed his post and has not posted since. If it was not for some people quoting him shortly after posting there would be no record that he posted at all, Why? In my opinion, it's because the vendors don't want you and I talking to people like that. We may ask the wrong questions and actually get some real concrete answers. It's better to keep us all guessing.

My real world experience with Dave's TC is that it works excellent. As an example, On the winding road to my house a comfortable speed to travel is about 42-45 mph. With my stock TC (which is unlocked till48mph) my tach would be around 1600rpm (flat level ground, steady speed). With dave's TC at 45mph, (flat level ground, steady speed) my tach is now 1250rpm. I used to either drive irritated at 42-45mph, knowing that I'm wasting lots of fuel, or speed up to 48 to get lock up and get my tach to drop to around 1200. His converter works the way they should come from DC. Are some more efficient? maybe, but this one works great. Like all good companies, Dave Goerend is constantly improving his products. I started to talk to Dave many months ago. When I finally was ready to buy and I called him again he said the price of his normal converter was now around $450, it had been about $360. He said he had made more improvements that increased the efficiency and that they required more money to produce. He then said that he would honor the original price he had quoted me, and this was several months later. There was then no doubt in my mind about the character of the person I was dealing with.

I am also a little surprised that more TC manufacturers are not using a triple disc converter. Dave makes one also. I'm not sure how many months he has been making it but they do work and I'll bet his works great

Dave will sell you what you need to reliably and efficiently put more power to the ground at a reasonable price. For example, If you have a stock or near stock engine you don't need a $300-400 valve body. He can make you one with limited (but necessary) mods for around $100. He will sell you what you need (not more, not less). I honestly feel that his company is a great way to go.

There are other great ways to go out there and I hope I have not offended anyone. These are some thoughts I had and I didn't want to air them in EarthRoamers thread

No offense will be taken if people keep on "discussing" Trans mods on EarthRoamers thread and make no comments here.

The trouble with this is the Allison (if you can find one) will cost $5000+, but upgrading the Dodge transmission is $3200. Also the Allison is now showing signs of 5th gear slippage with up rated power over 750lbs. ft. of torque, this is a mid range Cummins up rate. So you will then need to upgrade the VB to a tune of $700 through ATS. I feel you'd be better to stay with the Dodge transmission.

The trouble with milled stators (as I understand it) is not their stall characteristics, it's with their torque multiplication, a milled stator's poor torque multiplication becomes evident under low speed movement over obstacles and under heavy loads.

D. Showan, I've already said pretty much everything you said about Dave Goerend. I've had his mods for about a year now and I'm as pleased as I was the day I drove it out of his shop. The way Dave does his stators, loss of torque multiplication is not a problem. Dave does have a triple disk TC clutch that he recently had someone "torture test" with heavy towing and low RPM lockup. After many miles of this he tore it open and it still looked like new. According to Dave, the triple disk is the way to go if you want a really strong TC clutch for heavy towing.

Showan,

Good post, it's refreshing to see a level headed approach to this auto transmission maham. :)

Keep up the good work,

Ron

DShowan, thanks for taking the time to write that up. From all of the guys that have personally met or talked with Dave Goerend or have done business with him I have not heard one negative comment, not one. The right product for everyone is out there, and you are absolutely correct that there is not only one "right" choice.

Animal,

I'm sure the Allison would cost more but maybe with the right (minor) mods it would be bullet proof. I agree with you, the Allison would not be the way to go for 99% of us out there, but if cost is no object it would be nice wouldn't it?

As far as torque multiplication goes with a milled stator, I can tell you that I did the 6" curb test and my truck went right up and over. I found a 7" curb , slowly accelerated and at 1700rpm the rear tires will break loose. A little more weight in the back and I'm sure it would be no problem. You can't blame the TC for a lack of traction. I never drove a truck with one of those old milled stators (milled by people that were just learning what to do) All I can comment on is how good this one works. I'm not saying it's the ultimate in TC's, what I am saying is that it does work very, very well. I hope you can see that (possibly) all milled TC's are not the same and this is a good one.

Thanks to all that have replied, Dave S.

Daves 3TC

Showan,

I agree Dave Goerend builds a GREAT TC. I watched him build my 3TC, Dave explained everything each step along the way. When Dave showed me how my 3TC locked up with 3 lbs. of pressure, I was impressed. Then Dave put a torque wrench on it trying to break it loose. The torque wrench went over 200lbs and didn't move. Thats really locked up tight. Dave disassembled my trans explaining each step & why he did it. Its a pleasure to watch him in his labor of love.

After the trans was back in, Dave personally tested my truck. Dave put the truck thru its paces. I glad to tell you BOTH of us enjoyed the test ride. We were like a couple of kids with a new toy.

I highly recommend Dave's work! Oo. Oo. Oo.

If anyone needs proof stop in May 18 to visit and raise a couple a bucks for chairity.

If you need any more info you can talk directly to Dave just by picking up the phone. Dave won't sell you anything that you don't need.

Very informative and nicely written. Throughout my search for transmission upgrades, I found Dave to be the most professional and courteous of the vendors with whom I spoke and visited. I just wish he were a little closer.

D. Showan,

Very nice, informative post. I am glad you are happy with your transmission. A bombed transmission behind a Cummins is a treat to drive. I did the curb test the other day. Mine would climb over the curb at 1400 rpm. The 4. 10s and 315 tires gives me an advantage. If I went any higher with the rpm the tires would break loose.

Dieselnerd,

After I submitted my original post on this thread thought I remembered that the title for mine was very similar to a thread you started a while back and took a lot of BS for. I tried to change the name of this thread to "Ultimate Transmission Mods" but the moderators said that it couldn't be done. I hope the days of threads like that are gone forever. And for fans of Bill K. out there, I don't mean that I hope he is gone forever. Strangely, I was also saddened when I read that he may not be back.
