When To Use The Tow/Haul Feature?

I do the post above, The Ex. Brake... let it warm a min. then when I drive off, if just on streets, i use the shift button to keep the R's up but not over 2000. Haven't used the Tow/haul Mode. I think that just makes longer shift pattern but you can do that manually.

The EGR Seems to warm up the engine pretty fast as the exhaust gases go past a water jacket before getting re-burned. This seems to warm up the Engine faster than my '01 did.
 
When I start mine depending on the ambient air temp. I will wait until the grid heater light has turned off. Then start, turn cruise control on and set high idle to 1100 RPMS. Wait at least two to three minuets before backing out of the drive way or moving, maybe even more time if it is real could. I watch my oil pressure to ensure that I am in the normal range for my truck, before moving.

I used to turn on the Exhaust brake but not any more, the exhaust brake will not help to heat the engine any more now.

I then drive some what slow until the fluids start to move and I have gone at least a mile or more. Manually shift the auto trans, staying out of 5 and 6 gear, keeping the engine at 1500 to 2000 RPM'S during the warm up period. By now the truck should be good to go.

I'm confused about the cruise control statement. You seem to indicate that you can set the cruise control to a certain RPM without moving. I thought cruise control only worked at a set speed. ??
 
on my 06,I had to get the ******* to enable the fast idle feature. what vehicle do you have? if newer truck check the manual it tells about it. Pete.
 
powder, on the newer trucks if the high idle feature is enabled you can change the idle speed with the accel/decel buttons. In park without touching the brake you turn on cruise, hit the set button, at that point high idle will jump to around 100 rpm, then just hit accel or decel to change the idle speed.

Use common sense, if it's 50 degrees wait 5 seconds and go, if it's 10 below wait another 30 seconds and go. Idling does not build heat quickly in a diesel, so the quickest way to build heat is to drive it. Idling does not improve the lubrication. As soon as the pressure is up and oil has the chance to reach the end of the line (common sense, temp and viscosity) your just wasting fuel and probably washing fuel past the rings from incomplete combustion from low temps.

I've read something about a bypass valve that opens at certain temps or RPMs before the oil temp comes up. If this is the case, should I keep the RPMs below a certain level before the engine warms?
 
There is an oil pressure relief valve, just like most engines. It blows off and returns excess pressure to the crankcase. It will only bypass when the oil is very cold, and the engine RPM is high, and that's it's job, so no you don't have to do anything special, just drive it normally.
 
I hit the remote start while eating breakfast. With 30 degree temps and using the block heater it still has to run 15 minutes before the cab is real warm. And that is fine. I'll pay the little extra in fuel to have a warm cab and not scrape windows.

I'd rather avoid bypassing the filter, so what is the RPM limit of which you speak?
 
There is no set RPM, it is dependent on temp and viscosity of the oil and then how fast you are trying to pump it through the engine. With a mechanical guage you should be able to see the pressure level off by raising the RPM on a really cold engine. Don't know if there is a spec listed without looking but generally they are set to 70-100 PSI. I don't really see the need to worry about it. If you maintain your fluids per the manual and use quality products, some bypassing is not going to hurt anything. Just drive it normally, maintain it regurlarly, and enjoy the truck.

If it has an auto trans, just go to dealer and have feature turned on as stated in owner's manual. Anyone that has a manual trans, the cruise feature CAN be enabled by StarScan at the dealer, only if you ground the clutch safety switch wire which is located by the E-brake pedal. Wire is 4"-5" in length dark green with orange trace and terminated by heat shrink. I found out that DC wouldn't allow it on manual trans for "$afety rea$on$" and wants you to install module for PTO to enable.

I found a thread on the Cummins Forum How to engage high idle? - Page 7 - Dodge Cummins Diesel Forum with detailed instructions and printed it off to give the dealer since they told me it wouldn't work and they enabled it and it works fine. My dealership was happy with learning how to do it instead of turning customers away that wanted the feature.

Once enabled, it allows cruise to be set at default 1100rpm and with advance button it will increase to 1500rpm.

I personally use the block heater and turn on EB which disables EGR during warm-up and go inside until I hear EB shut off by itself and then drive off.

I still drive around slow for a mile or two since trans fluid and axle fluids are still cold and thick.
 
Warm Up

I am from Northern Minnesota, one of my real good friends is a service technicians for Dodge. He warned about letting the transmission warm up more than worrying about the engine. Grant it still warming up the engine is always important. The 48RE has a history in cold climates of the oil being to cold and therefore to thick. Good rule of thumb I was instructed was if the ambient temperature is between 0-32 degrees leave the truck in tow mode(or overdrive off) until the engine is up to normal operating temperatures. If the ambient temperatures are below 0 than do not run it with overdrive until. The engine does not run at high enough RPM to keep the transmission at the proper operating temperature. Additionally if you can get the block heater, battery blankets, and you can always install a polish heater(cardboard in front of the radiator). Something else that you can do if you can find one is to install a water cooled turbo. I takes the line that goes from the coolant system to the heater core for the cab and routes it through the turbo to cool the turbo. The nice and toasty exhaust gases tend to heat up the coolant real quick. Hope this is helpful.
 
The 48re tow/haul switch does not lock out 4th gear/overdrive unless the owner has requested the 21-006-07 flash be done. This flash will disable 4th, but you loose the modified shifting program you would normally get when engaging tow/haul.
