best way to change oil filter in Durango/4.7

hello

what is the best way to change the oil filter for a Durango,

since my wife has a 2000 model, and i change the oil in our vehicles, let me tell you, that plastic liner/cover under the engine with that hole/cover right under the oil filter, i use the 1 gal Ziploc bag to wrap around the filter and still get oil leaking on the bag/hand, cover, some on arm, so does anybody have a better way to get to the filter without spilling oil, or is it just me ?

thank you

also it's equiped with a 4. 7...

What engine is in your Durango? My wife's has the 360 and the oil filter is not a problem to get off at all. From the bottom. You can't even see it from the top. It's in the rear on the passenger side of the block

I have a '98 5. 2. What I do is I jack it up and let the front end hang, then I clean the inner lip of the wheelwell opening on the right side(you can see the filter straight on), and you can change it right there while resting your arms on the tire. I use the short Mopar/ Fram ph16 filter and it just fits through the hole standing open end up. Dave if you have the 4. 7 there, I don't know if this will work.

On our Durango, I got oil all over me, the floor, and the skid plate. My solution was trading it in for a Powerstroke Excursion.

I thought it was just me! My wife has a '99 5. 2 and everytime I remove the filter the oil runs down the side of the block and accumulates in the skid plates!

On my wife's 360, I reach over the tire through the fenderwell to remove/replace the filter. Then I have to crawl underneath to wipe up the oil. Silly 45 degree mount for the filter.

Oh Great, now I find out it's a PITA to get to the oil filter.

Guess I'll just have to figure it out because my wife LOVES this thing. Can't get her out of it.

Got mine a Dakota 4. 7. Haven't even looked under the hood. Doesn't rattle and shake so I just haven't been interested. It is leased so I will let Jiffy Lube deal with it:D

No problemo

My significant other has a Dakota with a 4. 7, this is what works for me. I remove the little plastic cover under the front and use a cup type filter wrench on a long extension and that puppy comes right on out with minimal spillage. Now if I spill a little oil it gets caught in the skid plate. This is better than it sounds because the skid plate has small drain holes in it (for when those Express Oil idiots spill the whole filter) this will give me time to put a rag or a pan under the drain holes and catch the spilt oil. One more word on these drain holes, they drip for a while, so just leave the pan under there overnight ( or go park in someone elses drive:D )

Jack it way in the air for body clearance(at 330 lbs I need all the help I can get),,Turn the wheels to the left all the way,and reach in over the passengers tire with my Craftsman strap wrench to loosen the filter,,Apply the oil catching glad baggie and spin her off,,Mine is a 5. 2(318) and its more of a pain for me getting under it than to change the filter,,Wife loves it,but, shes on a quest for a Intense Blue Short bed CTD,,Oh well,at least I can get under them.....
