Well i drove the truck last night stoped pretty well but still needs some work, when pushing the pedal the first time truck stops on a dime, but if i lift my foot and push again it feels like i'm out of vacuum, i think i should get more than one puh out of the booster,

going to check vacuum pump now, but not shure on the best way to check booster .

Brake Booster Test

A normal booster should give you three aplications of the brakes just after the engine is shut down. If it doesn't, try checking for external leaks, remember the heating and AC are vac operated too. There is also a check valve in the vac line where it connects to the booster, check to make sure it is working properly. Sometimes when the booster unit is worn out it doesn't fail completely it ends up intermittant, usualy because the diaphram inside has a crack in it that opens up only when in use.

propane

I read an intersting article in a recent 4Wd magazine. They say to use a propane torch (unlit). By slowly moving the propane near the vacuum lines and joints, a leak could be detected by the change in idle speed, as the propane would be combusted.

An interesting thought. Haven't tried it.

The propane trick is great for finding "engine" vacuum leaks on a gasser, because it will suck in the propane and change the idle speed.

Won't work on a diesel because they don't have a throttle plate to create vacuum. Also on these truck they use a separate vacuum pump,as opposed to the engine.

doh

you'd think I know that since all of the vacuum trouble I'm having. You're right ramguy.

disregard my wasted space. BTW, any ideas on where to get a vacuum pump (not booster)?

Vacuum pump

I don't think any of the parts houses have them, only the dealer or Cummins. Cummins would probably be way faster and cheaper.

be ready to be bent over as the stealer wants an arm and a leg for them.

Any one know if there is a kit to fix or repair the pump?

Although I have'nt had the need for one yet, I talked to Antelope Valley brake some time back and they wanted $95 for a rebuilt.
