What is the best way to drain oil in a 5600 6 spd? Just got some Amsoil for it and need to change it. If you remove the pto cover is the gasket reuseable and how to get all the oil out without any special tools, (any suggestions) Is the best way to fill it thru the shifter boot?

Thanks Jared

The bottom bolt on the PTO cover will drain it. I fill them thru the fill hole on the side. About a 5/8" allen head plug. If you pull the cover all the way off it will likely ruin the gasket but you can just silicon it back on without a gasket as long as it's just a cover not a pto unit. I pull the cover so I can see what's in the bottom, and have been meaning to get a set of filter covers from Geno's. Jake

Just did mine today, the fill plug is 17mm Hex Key (Sears) same size as used on VW Oil Pan. Remove the PTO Cover 13 mm head then pry off the PTO cover (there is no gasket) use your fingers to pump addition lube out and then some paper towels to sop up some of remaining lube, clean both the PTO cover and trans mating surface then apply some RTV on the cover, the OEM silicone had two beads (one on outer edge one on inner edge of the mating surface). Get a funnel that has a long flexible hose for the refill (worst part of the job). Thats it. Hope it is helpful.

Get back to us as to what, if any, changes occur to your shifting with the Amsoil - I tried it, and the syncros were VERY unhappy with it, and rewarded me with lots of gear grinding on shifts. I quickly drained it and went back to the DC stuff...

Maybe I should have added which lube I used - Red Line MTL, I'm sorry I did not do it sooner (12,000 miles). Previously I had installed a BD Short shift kit at less than 2,000 miles. The downshift to 4th was always ify, and I wondered if the the Short shift was the problem, definately not. It is now Its like a greased pig, click. I am sure the MTL made a difference.
