Best way to hold fan pulley?

Preparing to take my gear case cover off this w/e & was looking @ that LH 36mm fan nut.

Stuck a wrench in there to see whats up...

How are you guys holding that pulley enough to turn that 36mm nut?

I used a chain wrench when I installed the Horton Fan Clutch.

I wedged a large screwdriver between the pully bolts and "jerked" the wrench (to give it an impact) came loose. Remember it is a LEFT HAND thread. A chain wrench would work well but be certain not to scar the pulley or you will be eating belts forever.

Used an approx 3/8" diameter flat punch and gave the nut a few sharp raps on the flat of the hex. This loosened it enough so that a large screwdriver or small prybar could be wedged between the fan bolts to provide the minimal resistance needed when using the 36mm wrench. After hitting it a few times, the nut was fairly loose, and my fan had never been off since new.

I didn't have a wrench so I made one with a long handle. I used my large channel lock pliers to grip the circle of screw heads to hold the pulley and hit the handle of my wrench a few times to break it loose. It was a real PITA for a while trying to jam a screw driver in the screws and a couple other ideas before I tried the pliers. I expected to scar things up, but that didn't happen afterall.

CPFF made a custom wrench that fits over the head of the pulley bolts. Pretty slick!

Or, Use an old belt and visegrip it together.

If your belts are still on, rapping the wrench with a hammer should free it before the belt slips.

After performing the jig fix on 8 rigs the method I found that worked easily every time was to use a long drift placed on the right hand side of one of fan nut flats. A couple good raps with a hammer then hold the part of the pulley where the belt doesn't ride with large water pump pliers (Channel-Locs)then turn the nut with your large open end. Every one I did this way broke free easily, the Channel-Locs left barely a mark on the pulley's paint. Although I didn't try it if you have a pair of oil filter pliers they may work instead of large Channel-Locs, after you rap the nut it doesn't take much to hold the pulley.

Oh the benefits of being a machinist(CPFF).

This nut is a bit rusty & appears to be the original, so I imagine it might be a tad tighter than normal. WD40 is currently working on that.

I thought I was lucky that I just happen to have a 36mm wrench laying around...

Don't have a chain wrench, so was thinking about pulling a couple of the 10mm bolts & replacing w/ longer ones that would stick out & I could grab & not worry about scaring up. Don't think I have a channel lock big enough to grab stock bolts. Do have an old belt, so that may have potential.
