I just got back from a week long vacation in our '98 V-10 Ram. Hopefully this will be the last vacation we need to take in the V-10, because with the combination of a cab-over camper and a 10,000 lb. toy hauler trailer, we maxed out at just 35 mph on some of the steeper mountain grades. It is embarrasing to be going uphill, and be passed by an 18 wheeler.

Our new '02 ETH Ram should be here in a few weeks, and when it arrives I would like to "boost" the power somewhat. However, on our vacation I spent a good deal of time noticing how several modified Ram diesels would make lots of black smoke while towing their trailers up the same mountain grades. Several of them had travel trailers that were coated in soot because of all of the smoke.

I don't particularly want to be washing soot off my toy hauler trailer, so what is the best way to improve power without increasing smoke. As I see it my options are:

1. EZ, or True Torque Power Module, or equivalent

2. DD1 injectors, or equivalent

3. The combination of both an EZ (or TTPM) and DD1 injectors, if this wouldn't make too much smoke.

So what is the best way to get more power without more smoke?

Thanks.

fuel + oxygen = power = smoke

no way around it. An EZ will moderately increase smoke but amazingly increase power. Dont go past an EZ and RV275's if smoke is a worry. IMO, I'm sure others who know more than me will answer you too. I can email you the phone # of someone who is really good at this sort of thing if you want.

Smokeless? It will not happen. A little smoke?:D You bet! I would recommend a EZ. Don't forget gauges! Then if you want more try 275, BD1 or DD1 injectors.

Just a word of caution. BOMBing is additive! I know from experience!

 I understand the smoke as I can make the black soot with the best of em. The EZ was the best mod I put on. My understanding is that if, after I go to a 4 inch pipe out the back and then use a little propane induction, does not the smoke go away to be replaced by a whole lot more umph! At least that is what I got an idea to do to mine.

EZ + Air + Fuel + Little Propane = whowaaaaa!! Smokless??

Anybody got a set up like this?? Inquiring minds would like to know. :D :D :D

I would also suggest the Edge EZ as your first BOMB, try it with the stock injectors, still a huge difference in power. I ran this way for about 1000 miles (not all at once, lol) and it was all I could do to get a little 'puff' of black smoke . 'Course, don't have that problem anymore :D :D :D .

Just a word of caution, Propane has taken it's toll on HO's! Several have blown head gaskets from the use of propane on HO's.

Cuminntstrkn help us out,

Jim give us the latest on propane and head gaskets.

:) Good to know. My understanding is that it acts like nitrous in a car. From what I have heard, the less the better, because it causes the diesel to burn more completely. 85-89% will jump to 95-96%. So a little bit goes a long way. I'm still doing research on it. I know I will go with some different injectors after I get the 4" exhaust.

You may want to consider the Edge Comp due to the in cab adjustibility, but only if you plan on adding injectors. My ETH felt stronger with the EZ than it did with the Comp (stock injectors). Now that I have BD1's with a Comp, I have much more power available than with the EZ, and I can use level 1 and a lower sensitivity to prevent smoke.

Those that are being told to buy the PE COMP, be advised its classified as a "major" fueling box, meaning it attaches to the injection pump wire, where as the EZ will not. Just something that needs to be pointed out... ... ...

Go To the Edge

The EZ is probably your best bet.

Smoke is commonly caused by too much fuel added, with not enough air (boost). Injectors will smoke unless you add a boost elbow/module. The EZ comes with this. The modified elbow will allow the boost to go higher (because the wastegate doesn't open at 20 psi (stock)). The boost module (built into the EZ) corrects the signal to the MAP sensor, so the ECM will not know of the over-boost (which would cause it to fault out).

The EZ will add fuel, based on boost pressure (which is selectable). By moving the jumper setting, the box will not add fueling until higher boost, thus no smoke.

Also very easy to install/remove.

Nearly smokeless with LOT'S of power.

See my setup in the sig.

Used to have DDIII injectors (originals). Smoked quite a bit with the slighest lugging (leaving the line and shifting) -- had to drive really careful. Left a little vapor trail under load. Now no noticeable smoke except under the hardest acceleration in bad conditions; and then barely discernible. Temps are also in the safe range even at WOT.

Kept it pegged blowing by a new Chevy gasser who thought he was hot stuff on the way home tonight. He floored it and went by me doing 80; I was doing 60. When he was coming past and I knew he wanted to play I dropped the hammer and went by him at 105. Guess he couldn't pedal any faster. Never went over 1200 degrees. I was reeling him in the whole way once I gave it the go juice.

Don't want smoke?? Sounds like heresy to me!! A little self-hypnosis and meditation is indicated in a situation like this..... here's your new mantra: "Sssssmmmmmoooooke is goooooooood (x500)" See if that doesn't bring you round to the DARK side!! :D :D

The Powershot 2000 propane system I'm using seems to cut down on the smoke quite a bit, when I'm pulling my travel trailer.

I run it in combination with a Van Aaken and DD3 injectors. What smoke there is, is thanks to the Hx40 turbo lag... but under load, it spools up quickly. I don't use the TST PM3 box when the propane is on, though it stays connected for benefit of the built-in boost module. No loss in miles-per-gallon while towing. :D

Not all propane systems are the same. Some are better and safer than others.

Hemi,

My '02 Ram ETH will look just like an '01 Ram ETH, and will be Bright Silver Metallic. It is a 3500 model, which will not see the new body style until '03. And speaking of that new body style, I saw a group of a dozen '02 Ram 1500s driving down the road all together, while on my vacation. I wondered if they were being driven caravan style to a dealer that had some arrangement other than the usual Train/Truck delivery method. Anyway, I did NOT like the new body style after seeing it in person, so I'm glad I'm getting one of the last of the current style trucks. Perhaps the new body style will grow on me, but it sure hasn't done so quite yet.

I have heard that Dodge will increase production of Ram 1500s by 35% next year, to take advantage of the new body style's expected popularity. To accomadate this increase in Ram 1500s, the Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 production will be cut almost in half, from 130,000 units to 75,000 units. BOY AM I GLAD I ALREADY HAVE MY '02 3500 ORDERED AND ON THE WAY! Expect 2500 and 3500 '02 trucks to become scarce by mid year.

Thanks for the responses everyone. It looks like a boost module will be the best way to go for me. I'll plan on first adding either the DD TTPM or an Edge EZ. If I want more power after that I can go with the DD1s or DD2s.

Smoke is good if you are showing off, or drag racing. But if you're pulling a brand new bright white 30' toy hauler trailer every weekend, spending half a day washing off the soot each time when your done is really going to get old in a big hurry.

Black Haze

I have the powermax 2 and their highflow injectors and all I get when standing on it is a light haze, but when loaded heavy and lugged down will smoke but not like a 12valve. Personally I would like a little more smoke but most other drivers seem to not mind.

Later
