I am running SMARTY Catcher-7 with torque=3, timing=2, rail pressure=2 and stock wastegate. The acceleration is good and the smoke is acceptable, but the EGT climbs quite rapidly and I always have to back out of the go pedal long before I get close to 3Krpm. I have accidently touched 1500 degrees a few times too.

Suggestions to reduce EGTs?

Andy

Are you running any sort of aftermarket intake or exhaust?

Also double check the accuracy of your EGT guage with another... I think this may be an issue I have, that the guage reads hotter than I actual reach.

boost & temp

I get about 26lbs of boost and yes I have cross verified my temps with other thermocouples. My plans after I get my 600 Overkill paid off are to add ATS 3000, aftermarket pulse exhaust manifold, and a bigger unrestricted exhaust pipe turbo-back.

What about methanol injection? Does it work reliably?

Andy

A simple boost elbow will help in the interim. Another 10 lbs of boost will slow down the temp rise considerably. Add some water\meth injection and that should make things a lot better.

How does a boost elbow help?

More boost which equals more air. Your only getting roughly stock boost with a lot more fuel, its going to be hot.

Add a boost elbow to the Waste gate controller and shut it almost all th way down. You should be able to push your boost up around 32-35 psi. That will help a lot to slow down the temp rise. It will still get hot if you stay in it but it will take a lot longer to get there at 35 psi as opposed to 25 psi.

As was mentioned, careful on the high temps as the valve seats are known to have issues on that year. You also have to much timing in it with the timign on 2, thats for mileage and the lower power tunes up to SW#4. Either back to 1 or 3 if your empty when pushing a lot of fuel.

I always thought that more timing = lower EGT's

Dennis

Only where its being measured, the heat is still there in the cylinder. Too much timing and too much fuel with a lack of air equals melted pistons. The burn time in the cylider is increased which increases heat soak.

Yup that heat has to go somewhere

Get that Auora 3000 sooner rather then later, and a 4 or 5 inch turbo back exhaust and that will help

I think James is on the right track. A BHAF and a 5 inch straight pipe exhaust would work wonders for your egt's, spool times, and probably boost pressure too. Not sure what the waste gate pressure is set on these newer model trucks but a boost elbow that vents exhaust above 36 psi would be a must. Much more boost than that and you will need ARP studs and perhaps a few other mods.

If you are on a budget do the '04. 5 (HE351) turbo upgrade. I did the ATS exhaust manifold and full 4" exhaust at the same time. With my JR turned all the way up and towing long hills in hot weather as high as I can get it is 1250F. Until you get a boost elbow just put a pair of needle nose vise grips on the boost line to the wastegate or shorten the actuator rod. The ATS 3000 is not wastegated. The HE351 will support 450hp. I guess that I am close to 400hp. If you want info on the turbo swap drop me a pm.

I had the same heat problem in my 04. 5 with the stock turbo, installed a silver 62 and I can hammer it all day and never go over 1200*F. I was also seeing 35-38 pounds of boost with the stock turbo,I am surprised you're only seeing 25.

does the (HE351) turbo come in an 06'. i have an 06' and i really want to make sure my EGT's stay down, because of the valve seats. What turbo mod can i do to create more boost? also what is the stock boost of a HE351?
