after reading all the posts about ball joints over the years, I was thinking people are crazy, Well I had my '02 in to have a vibration looked at, turns out all my ball joints are toast. my truck only has 84k on it and the joints have likely been gone for a long time. I was wondering if they have done anything to the 3rd gens to make the ball joints last longer

Since mine were toast with less than 1000 miles on the clock, I'd say NO.

No problems after replacement 19k later... .

ball joints have been on cars for many years, you would think something simple like that, they would have figured out long ago, but then again judgeing by the way my '02 steers, basically like an old school bus since day one, it stands to reason they wouldn't have made the ball joints adequite either. I do know my dad's 04 steers like a sportscar in comparison, but this is rediculous these things should last to at least 150k BTW my truck has very seldom been off pavement
