Good afternoon, Gentlemens! FH and C Carpenter change the oil in their rigs this past weekend. Somehow the oil made a tidal wave from the drainage pan back up and over FH's head. C Carpenter has been laughing about it since. FH didn't think it was so funny. Anyhoo, I bought a nice SS exhaust tip for the exhaust pipe that is just hanging down, crying out for some finishing "bling." I bought the IFOKA model, 6" diameter, nice looking on the outside, but you can see the exhaust pipe inside it, with quite a large margin between them. This does not look so nice. It just says "I am trying to look bigger," when the real goal here is to look more finished and refined. Does any of you have a suggestion for such an item that might fit in a way that does not reveal the "truth" of the exhaust pipe?

I used an MBRP 4 to 5" polished stainless turn down tip on my 3rd gen and it works and looks great IMO.

No one can see inside it since it's a turn down tip and that also helps keep soot off the rear quarter panels when Im driving under load. ;)

I'm thinking what ever tip you use it's going to change colors do to the heat of the exhaust. i.e. stainless will change to a golden hue.

Either paint the inside flat black with high temp paint or cut the factory short with a sawzall and re attach new Long compensator tip.

I ran a turn-down for a while as I like the look, but what I didn't look was how much dust it kicked up on dirt roads.

As for a tip there isn't any way to put a 6" tip on a Ram and not have it say "I'm trying to look bigger" Even a 5" has the effect, IMO.

Big trucks of any class are remarkably quiet these days. Credit SCR, but exhaust tip diffusers are a part of it.

Some you might not “believe” were I to post them. Yet have Mack or Volvo or Freightliner part numbers.

(Have some fun while looking).

The turn-down problem is one of location and rotation.

Y’all know how GM orients their diesel diffuser tip. The pipe needs to remain higher after the axle bend (would interfere with spare) and angle slightly towards center, but an end-downwards location with tip rotation not ground-parallel, but slightly towards vehicle center . . utilizes aerodynamics to keep back pressure reduced.

Think on the low, rotating dust cloud develops behind a speeding pickup on a summers dirt road. That “cloud” can be utilized for exhaust scavenging.

— Keep most of a long diffuser hidden from view. Angled slightly over towards center , exiting down, and rotation-clocked.

Chrysler Corp engineers did plenty of exhaust science work in the early 1960s. David Vizard will take you through the steps if you want. Any 440-powered Police Pursuit had duals that turned up before bending down to exit, and tips should have been clocked slightly towards each other.

Only about an inch or so visible below bumper. (I think 2.0” might do it for a CTD; visible, not a backing impediment).

A good model for a diesel single exhaust if fab expense and (potentially) using Titan spare tire holder in bed is acceptable.

Put some science to it.

I did the same on my 06. It kept the soot off the Torklift camper tie down. I did cut the factory pipe back some so it didn't stick out much more than the stock pipe.
