Thinking Of Switching From Tst To A Smarty ?

Is 80,000 miles to late for new torque and valve body?

I am a newly subscribed member as of Friday. I have been enjoying the TDR for years and something finally prompted me to sign up so that I could share an experience.

In January, I added a triple disk TC and a valvebody that I bought from Dave Goerend after reading threads concerning his products. Everything was great until a couple weeks ago when my father in law passed away. We were on our way out of town pulling the 5er on our way to the funeral when something let loose in the transmission at the end of a pretty long grade. It shot transmission fluid out the breather and the dipstick and I new the transmission was overheated. I have a guage on my Commander but it was only reading 215 so I did not know how it could be too hot. Anyway... to make a long story short, had the truck towed back into Tempe to check it out.

TriCity opened it up and said the TC had failed to attain lockup and burned the fluid and everything else in the transmission.

They got on the phone with Dave Goerend and told him what thad happened and his response was flat out amazing. Dave's first concern was for me his customer and what ever he could do to make it right... he did. Dave even offered to ship me out another complete transmission to help us get the truck back on the road. The transmission shop ended up rebuilding the original unit but they said they would not guarantee the transmission because I did not install their TC and VB. Dave told me that if they wouldn't guarantee their work HE WOULD! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! He said he did not want me to have a transmission without a warranty. Now I don't know why the TC was not locking up ... but every company has a bad part every now and then. . I don't care how good they are. The real point of this thread is that I wanted to share my experience and applaud David on his manner of doing buisiness. He has a customer for life as far as I am concerned. Reputation really does matter and Dave is an absolute stand up guy. Thanks again Dave... . and thanks to the TDR for providing such a forum for us to hear about such people! Sorry for the long post.

Thanks... I have found that you guys are a good crew to hang around with.

As a side note, there are probably a bazillion opinions on this but I do not think the test port on the side of the transmission is a good place for a temperature probe! It did not save me in time as evidenced on the first post!

IMO the best option is the trans cooler line offered by Diesel Manor. It's an OEM part that's been modified with a place for your temp sensor. It's not too expensive either, around $70 IIRC...

You pick up the temp on the way to the cooler. Best place to get a temp, I think.

Dave Goerend spent 45 minutes on the phone with me educating me about torque converters, e-mailed me photos to further illustrate the way they work. He called me back as promised and was patient and knowledgeable. That was over a year ago. -no sales pitch, etc. I just can't say enough good things about the man. I guess that is why I am picking up my truck in a couple of hours with all new Goerend parts!

Great to see another satisfied customer. Stories like yours are the reason why Dave is our go-to supplier for transmissions and components. I am hard pressed to recommend or sell anything other than his parts because I know he'll stand behind them.
