Based on the info I have read here, I have decided to buy a set of BF Goodrich A/T KO tires to replace my OEM Michelin LTX A/S which have given me 59,000 miles trouble free. The reason I wish to change is I am tired of getting stuck on level wet grass fields. The Michelins just sit and spin (even with LSD). I am expecting more from the BFG's. I have talked with local dealer and can get a set of blemishes for $170 each mounted and balanced. Steep, but less than the Michelin M/S by $40 per tire and less than the non-blemished by $36 per tire. Hey, a buck is a buck! As long as the blemish is not a slew of profanities or something, He He.

The question I have is the dealer says I can only get an 8 ply tire. "D" rating. That is all they make. I really want a 10 ply like I have but the load rating of the D is still a little over 3000 pounds per tire at 65psi. (If I remember correctly, my notes are downstairs) This is about 400 pounds per tire less than the current 10 ply Michelins, but I don't haul much.

Can anyone confirm that I can not get a 10 ply BFG? Am I making the right choice? I have a 2WD and I do not expect this tire to look like a big Off-roaders tire. It doesn't, does it. I just want a little more tread.

Thanks,

David

you can get the A/T in 265/75 R16D, 245/75 R16E, 235/85 R16E

anything larger than 245/75 and you are limited to Load Range D in the BFG

the 265's have an OD of 31. 8 inches and the 245's have an OD of 30. 6 the 245's might fit on a 8" wheel, but may look goofy... the 235's are to narrow for the factory 8"wheel.

David,i had the 8 ply on my 2000,and ran at 11K GVWR in the winter, with only a 2500,i had no problems with the KO's. When plowing I occasionally hit,and hop a few curbs, some of them 8" tall. I also rub against them when cleaning tight to curbs around radius curves. I didnt do any damage to the KO's,they also get excellent traction. If you hardly haul I wouldnt worry about it,since the limit is over 3300 lbs a tire for the 285,thats about the limit of the rims.

When I bought my truck used, it had a set of 'c' rated tires (265's). Some no-name brand. I figured it needed tires so the seller put a cheap-o set on there to get it sold. I pulled a 5 horse trailer with it several times as well as a 24 ft gooseneck flat bed loaded up pretty good. The tires got a little mushy with the load, but were ok otherwise. I finally blew out a side wall doing some mild four wheelin with a load in the bed (about 500 lbs of stuff). I had to swith down to 245's to get 10 ply's (Coursers from Cooper I think). I don't like the looks nearly as well, but in '98 this was the stock tire size. I've seen a few D/C's running around with 235/85/16 and it looks much better and I might go with that next time.

BTW I used to have a Chevy 1500 and had BFG AT TA's on it and they were the best tire I have ever had for loads, traction, etc. They had about 40k on them when I sold the truck and they had about 5-10k left on them. At the time I lived in the mountains and was hard on those tires (I liked to spin them if you know what I mean).
