Pre-Engine Bomb - Auto Trans Mods???

piggyback powermax and ez!

My stock air filter was filthy, so I ordered the NAPA 2790 BHAF and installed it yesterday. I love that girthy filter and it just sits where the old air box used to be as I don't see any reason to mount it. My only concern is that my EGT's have jumped up about 100's than when I was using the stock filter. As far as I can tell, I'm not driving any more aggressively after the installation. This doesn't sound normal to me, what do you guys think?

If it dropped at all, my pre-turbo EGT might have dropped 25 to 50 degF with the NAPA 2790 BHAF. It certainly didn't go up.

My EGT's went up too... :(

Must be something with the altitude.

Or maybe sucking in all of that radiator heated air.

I know when pulling all of my stuff up to Eisenhour Tunnel I've got to back out of it to stay below 1300*

I'm about ready to go back to the stock airbox with an Amsoil filter in it.

Many Moons ago some one wrote about how the intercooler on our rams could only be rated at about 27 lb's of boost and after that the air started to stack up inside the intercooler and starting to have a negative effect of what the intercooler was there in the first place, basically rendering it useless for cooling. Yes it will pass more air and the more fuel you burn the more air you need but I'am beginning to think this guy was onto something. Don't know if this is what is happening or not but could be some what of an explaination.

I tried a BHAF last year when my K+N RE0880 needed a cleaning. The egt's were about the same as the K+N. I never ran the truck with the stock filter, after the step 3 injectors ( now 5's) and the ez/HX40 install. I can tell you my egts ( pre-turbo) are very low with what I have. The highest I have ever seen is somewhat over 1250 with the TST box on as well. With just the EZ box and 5's, my egts are always below 1200 and seldom rise above 1100. I towed over 10,000 lbs. this past summer on a very hot day. The egt's remained sane as long as I choice the proper gear for towing.

I am basically stock as you can see by my signature. However, the best bang for the buck when it came to lowering my EGT's was cutting off my muffler.

I tow an 11,000 LB TT and am no longer able to get any higher than 1250*. The BHAF was a small decrease, but muffler removal was good for about 100* to 150* at max throttle pulling. Prior to these changes Iwas able to go above 1300* with ease.

If they went up, could be because that 2790 (same as what I put on yesterday) isn't that far from the turbo. Don't have the air box to block any of the heat. Don't have my new gauges in yet ( hope to get them in tomorrow), so I don't know for sure. I have heat shield on my turbo.

the reason the egt's went up is because u're now pulling in hot air from the exhaust side of the turbo. The BHAF suck, and i don't meen air. If u want to buy a filter buy a K&N or AFE drop in air filter, or if u really want to pull air get a AFE mega Cannon, or if u want cool air get a Scotty II, just don't get those worthless BHAF.

Reb I don't want to start an arguement but you can't say that the BHAF's are worthless with so many TDR members running them with great results. Look how many posted the same as I did.

they are worthless, sorry. I don't care if everybody on the TDR likes them. The only reason people like them is because they are BIG. who cares. Put one of those next to a Mega Cannon and u'll never go back to that big ball of paper again

Your right I won't, I'll be getting a Scotty II soon because I plan on adding a #10 plate and on down the line a set of injectors.

The BHAF is a nice compliment to lowering EGT's when close to stock though.

BHAF sux. throw it in the trash! It does not flow as much as people say. I too saw an increase of heat with the BHAF. 50 to 100* at least. I did a test one day last summer and found out that the AFE was at least 140* less than the BHAF. Throw that cheap piece of crap in the trash. Buy a real filter... ... .

myself i have seen more egt reduction in the Scotty II than the AFE mega Cannon. But the mega Cannon should pull more air. If the Scotty II had a larger box around the filter i think it would help alot.

Reb do you run the Scotty II in "hush mode" (oem fender outlet only) or "turbo in your lap mode" (cowl hole cut)?

With a remote temp probe stuck on the BHAF at the closest point to the turbo I recorded 15 deg avg temp increase over ambient temps as long as the truck speed was over 10mph so it seems that the dreaded under hood heat problem is minor most of the time. The only time that this temp was above about 15 deg was pulling a long grade with a trailer and then it was about 40 deg above ambient and cooled back down right away over the top. The BHAF is an improvement over the stock filter for most applications.
