Hi guys. Long time no post, but I've got an itch now with air supply. After pulling a 5,000 lb. trailer over Stevens Pass in Washington State last year and being startled at having to back off on fuel because I was hitting 900 EGT (post turbo) at 55 in 5th, I know I'm going to be in trouble with the 7500 lb. trailer (plus 1000 lbs. in the truck) I'll have this year - - and I didn't think you could get into high EGT trouble with a stock engine - -
I've searched these wonderful forums and I'm leaning heavily towards a BHAF with the heat shield DieselMinded designed (template available at http://www.dieselminded.otisnet.net/toppage2.htm . I'm not convinced that the cost of an AFE system would be worth it, and I'm troubled by some reports of high silicon counts in oil analysis with folks that have used that system. I personally won't touch a K&N.
I wondering if any members have used a sheet metal fabricator to fab the heat shield DieselMinded designed and are happy with the results. A local guy in the Puget Sound area of Washington would be great, but I'd be happy to do mail-order business with someone who can do a good job at a reasonable price. I've noted DieselMinded's template calls for 1/8" stock - I'm assuming we're talking stainless and not mild steel here (although I suppose the mild steel could be painted with high-temp paint). Anyway, if any of you know someone that is good at making the heat shield, if you could post or PM the information to me I would sure appreciate it.
Thanks,
Jon
