How Many Miles on Your BHAF??

Luke Clutchs

hi, guys. my warranty is almost over (500mi) and i want to install a BHAF.

i had installed a K&N but oil analysis showed high silicone so out came the K&N.

my questions are is the BHAF a paper element?; does the BHAF filter as well as the stock?; are the AFE type kits worth the money or is the NAPA solution better?

thanks in advance guys.

I got my BHAF from Cummins. (Fleetguard) I almost sucked my K&N inside out. The filter is paper, but seems to be working well with my set-up. Good luck

I liked mine a lot and only changed when something better came along. Got mine at a truck parts place. It was always clean inside when checked.

Peter,

I like the Napa 2790 with the Outerwears prefilter. It does a great job at keeping moisture away from the paper should any water get under the hood. Get the water-repellant model if you order one. My sig says K&N but I switch between that and the Napa 2790 depending on the noise level I want (long trip with wife = Napa).

americana,

No one really commented on the AFE part of your question. In my opinion, BHAFs are a good alternative for their low price. aFe is a higher quality product thus the pricetag. The aFe is a better solution, but costs more. Whether or not it is worth the money depends on each individual's preference.

thanks. there's a couple of questions that are still unanswered. but maybe they are coming :)

i like the idea of a kit (heat shield, ability to use restriction gauge). may have to bite the bullet on that one.

i'd really like to know if it filters as well as the stock one. i'm due for a transmission service, fuel filter, dual bypass filters etc. and i'd like to do the conversion to the BHAF (which ever one i go with) since i am nearing the "i am my own warranty station" mileage.

CM,

The BHAF itself if just the regular paper element (Napa 2790 or equivalent Fleetgard, etc... ) I have the outerwears pre-filter water resistant cover on mine. It is a real thin parachute type material. Call Outerwears and they will take care of you. The part number you need to cover a Napa 2790 is : WR3325-105

WR stands for water resistant, that's what you want.

You also can choose the color you want, they can make almost any color.

Outerwears: 1 800 967-3450

I'm not affiliated, just a happy customer.

does anyone know if you can just buy the heat shield from afe and use the napa filter? will it work? i don't want to go the reusable filter route again.

I'll go ahead and second JStull and say I'm extremly happy with the BHAF and the WR Outerwears cover. I've now had the same filter for going on 8 mos. and under the cover it still looks new. And by the way, if it'll stay clean and dry on mine I think it'll fair grat on most everyone else's.

I would think that the BHAF would be just as good as stock. I just purchased another OEM element for my truck. It seems Dodge has decided that the foam prefilter is no longer needed on the unit. The BHAF does seem to have more surface area as well.

I'm running a paper filter on my AFE. (Fram CA7430) It is a real tight fit, but it works great. I'm running a paper filter because we're in the dusty season right now, and I just don't trust the AFE filter in these conditions. Today visibility was down to less than 100ft with 50mph winds. I like this setup, but if I had to do it again, I think I could save about $150 by just puting together a BHAF. PM me if you have any questions.

BHAF= cheap, high flow, great protection, easy to install.

I have had mine about 25,000 miles and the filterminder hasnt budged. It has been wet a few times, and no problems. Just not soaking wet.

I have Larry B's (stainless steel) turbo heat shield. Works great, and reasonable in price. The filter is always cool to the touch. Easy to install.
