BHAF vs stock air filter

Has anyone test flowed the BHAF vs the stock unit? I ask because I was told the BHAF will not flow much better than the stock unit 400 or better and thats it. Is the BHAF an underachiever? Is athis filter no better thatn stock?



Has there been comparisons of the BHAF and the stock uint vs the oiled cloth cone units?



Feel free to chime in, please.

Joe Donnelly did a flow test on several different air filters which he wrote up for one of the last few TDR issues (I can't remember which one).



If I remember right, the BHAF flowed significantly better than stock, but there were a couple others that flowed better.

Flow numbers for standard BHAF: AH1903700=687 ft3/min



... For the Marine Version:AH1900400=918. 19 ft3/min



I changed to the Marine version after replacing my original BHAF.

If I remember right, that article stated that if the truck HP was less than 500, the increased air flow didn't really make a difference. The stock filter is okay to use until significant mods are made.

i crossed ref'd the Fleetguard to a Donaldson site (same filter), the Donaldson site states the B105013 (Fleetguard AH19004) actually flowed LESS than the Donaldson B105006 (Fleetguard AH19037).

so i called Fleetguard and they said that it was the same identical filter and element as the AH19037 w/the exception the "marine" application (AH 19004) has an internal structure support (screen) to prevent the filtering element from breaking down and being sucked into the turbo -- Fleetguard tech: "flow should be the same. "



i'm currently running the Donaldson B105006 on my '03 -- in constant search for more FILTERED CFMs

OK folks - the marine version

can't that be dangerous???? Afterall marine engines don't usually have to deal with much dust?

the Fleetguard tech told me that it is the identical filtering element - esentially paper or some fancy name for a paper like substance. initial and final filtering efficiency is identical 98 and 99. 9% respectively for the AH19037 and AH19004.

it isn't the filter that is restrictive - the box FILTER may flow 400 CFM - but the BOX usually is the restrictive component of the intake system. BHAF eliminates the box and provides a greater filter surface area = higher intake airflow

FWIW, I have an EZ and a NAPA BHAF. I tow heavy, over big hills, at high altitudes (thinner air). I had already tried removing the tube from the stock air box to the inside of the fender, then I put in the BHAF. It makes a significant difference when I'm pulling a 12K lb boat trailer up and over the mountains.

what kind of significant diff? egt's ? engine temp gage ? boost?

Sorry, no gauges to quantify the difference - just SOP.



Very noticeably smoother sound at higher RPM, quicker through upper RPM's. Seems like more power and easier running when pulling a hill, or even up a long relatively mild grade with a heavy load.



Also, it gets clogged up with dirt in dusty conditions far less quickly.

i have a BHAF on my Excursion PSD and it runs remarkably better than my old K&N/factory box piece of bantha fodder. it pulls hills better without downshifting (lugging/torgue) but if you decide to poke it, it hurls the mass forward - its quite an experience to be pushed back in your seat in an 8,000# SUV. my BHAF on my 03' CTD is far less noticeable on the performance side - i did get 1 mpg of gain w/BHAF - the factory restrictive exhaust is a large part of my diesel's limiting-potential factor. conclustion: the BHAF/intake performance will be limited as long as your exhaust is restricting throughput. my BHAF is suppose to flow 680 CFM while the factory muffler flows 390 and some change. not too bad as far as factory mufflers goes - but still DOES NOT cut it.

zachv it originated from the fact that they *are* big honkin' air filters!!!



Anyone got a pic for zachv??



In regards to flow rates I recall that the Wix and Napa versions do not flow as well as the Fleetguards but I have no idea where that post is.



The proper way to measure flow is how much CFM they can flow with the vacuum held at 2 or 3 cm/H2O across the board.

Vaughn, thanks. I actually have one, but I just thought the interesting term must have an interesting story behind it. For example, instead of just calling it the 2490 or something, like most other parts are referred to by their part number, why did someone make the determination to call the BHAF a BHAF?

This is the first BHAF post. When my untried and untested (at least in our application) Wix filter showed up and I installed it in front of the local NAPA store, the first reaction was;

" That's a Big ******* Air Filter" well you can't say things like ******* in civilized company, hence the use of Honking.



I don't recall who shortened it to BHAF, but that has become a common term even on other boards in our little niche of the performance world.
