when installing my bhaf do i leave the factory air filter box bottom in or do i take the entire thing out? got mine in today and man that thing is huge

I took mine out and made a mount. Do a search on a mallory mount. I've seen alot of guy's just leave it on the fender though. I don't think there is any way to leave your air box in and fit that big momma Oo.

Take out the bottom of the box, but you have to isolate the 3 mounting studs so they dont put holes into the filter. I used a piece of 1x4 about 12-14" long and slid it under the AC line to keep it there. . Never secured it, as the way it fits, it wont fall out. Been there for 30k now, so i think its workin good heh. .

Make sure to open the filter side hoseclamp -all- the way to allow it to open enough to get the filter on flush. Theres no internal reinforcement, so dont crank down that sucker. Be sure both ends are grease-free, mebe wipe em down with alcohol. Loosen up the turbo side too so you can rotate the hose to get the best fit for the bhaf.

I put a turbo shield on my turbo to keep some excess heat off the filter. Foster truck makes em, stainless, for 20$. Looks good, and keeps more heat in the turbo instead of in the engine cavity. I forget the link, its searchable tho. .

good luck... enjoy that BHAF heh. .

A few quick details. Check the ac line thats between the closed end of the BHAF and the firewall. If the filter looks like it could make contact (likely will) protect the ac line. I split a piece of hose and put it over the aluminum line, secure it with zip ties.

Jerry is correct, gotta do something about the 3 studs, on both our trucks, I used a big hammer to drive em down and out of the fender. Don't see ever needing them again. If I do reinstall the stock housing (not likely) it will stay in place without them.

I'm a firm believer in using a stiffner in the neck of the filter. Back in 2001 when I discovered the BHAF, I installed it while still in the parking lot of the local NAPA, just stuck it on and tightened the clamps. A couple of days later, the filter neck had puckered a bit allowing unfiltered air into the engine.

I now use a 2" or so long piece of 4" exhaust pipe in all BHAFs I install. That way you can crank down on the clamp with no worries.

Good luck, RJR

does anyone know how much air thoes filters flow, my friend wants one and i see a drop in k&n flows 440 cfm and the round tube one i got flows 880 cfm and was wondering if anybody knows what thoes will flow. i see a lot of people do not like the k&n filters, why?? ive never had a problem with mine but have been wanting to get a afe just because they do flow more air.

Who is or where is Foster truck to get a heat shield?

The stainless sounds like a great price!!!!

ok just got done installing the bhaf. i took everyones advice and got the 4 inch exhaust pipe. no auto parts store locally carries a 4 inch exhaust can u believe it. don't people with hot rods use larger exhaust? anyway i found a pardos trucking about half hour away from me and i bought a 4inch by 8 inch exhaust tip. that was the smallest they had. it was about 11 bucks. i cut it at about 2 and a half inches long with a sawzall. i took the factory box out. i noticed that the bhaf only came in contact with one of the bolts holding the factory box,the bolt was the one closest to the cab and i hit it like hell. i also hit the other 3 just because. i took two pieces of hose and wrapped them around all exposed ac pipe around the filter area and i used tie downs just like you said. it was kinda a pain to get the factory hose to go over the new filter but i forced on it for a few minutes and i really cranked down on the clamp. i had to take the hose off the turbo to put it on. hey maybe next time i change the oil filter i will disconnect the hose then to cause its a pain to change that filter with the hose in the way. with the hose removed i have alot of room to work. well anyway job is done and the hood does not seem like it is coming in contact with the filter when i close the hood. thanks again for all your help and i will let you know if i really feel a difference on the way to work this afternoon. :D

the heat shield is avaliable at www.fostertruck.com.

they are also the ones that sell the starter contacts, marine grade hoses, and fuel relays. great people to deal with.

Do a search on K&N and you will find lots of info on why a lot of people dont like them. Basically, they just dont filter as well.

pwerwagn got the link before i did, Waynesworld... Theyre a good company, fast shipping, good service. Got my starter contacts from them too. . The heat shield is (i feel) a mandatory item if you dont fab up a large BHAF support that shields heat. I was going to do this, but couldnt find the time, and the screw-on shield fit the bill nicely. .

mjoppie: The K&N filter is not a good idea. tests have been done, which show it lets too much particulate into the intake. The round tube one (whichever you are talking about, I dunno), may be a good filter, but theyre usually 2x-5x the cost of a BHAF (45$) and they dont last quite as long due to less filter mass. Its been proven that the high priced air filters dont give that much of a performance increase over the Fleetguard AH19037, so why spend the extra $? Just my opinion of course. . heh

K & N Drop-in Filter

I have used one for about two yrs now. I have had no problems. :)

No excessive oil build up, clean intake tube and turbo. Clean and oil it after every other oil change.

pwerwagon,tpOd,

Thanks for the "heat shield" info. Although the "heat shield" I referred to was a fender mounted piece of stainless that is fastened to the fender. Then it turns up to protect the filter from the heat. Its a dual role of holding & protecting. I found a template design & someone to make it up for me. I'll let you know how it works out. If I think of it, a picture or two might work its way into the reply as well.

what is a bhaf? this is my first diesel, i've had it for 2 years, it's a 97, 3/4 ton 5 speed 4x4. There are no mods on it right now, i need more money first, but i want to know all i can about diesels. Thanks, bryan

i already have noticed a difference with the bhaf on. i removed the k&n drop in filter because i saw it just was not filtering properly. i opened up the factory canister to recharge the filter and their is alot of dirt in the bottom canister and it was alittle dirty around the turbo inlet. and there was alot of oil in the intake hose. the filter is just to messy and it does not filter very well. with the bhaf on the truck feels like it is light on its feet and i feel better that my truck is getting much better filtration.

also today i removed the silencer ring with needle nose pliers and a screw driver. today on the way to work i hope to hear her sing. thanks everyone for your help and have a nice holiday.

Did you like the singing turbo!?

oh yea loved it. now i can hear her sing even when she is not under load. even while i was coming to a stop at a redlight she was singing. it sounded like some kind of aircraft or something. when i got to work i sat in the parking lot for a minute and she was singing to me at idle now i know what everyone is talking about by driving without the radio on. :--)
