Another Dumb Question...



Whats the advantage of a BHAF? Per Cummins web-page they discourage the use of them.



" DaimlerChrysler and Cummins do not recommend the use of increased flow air filters such as K&N, because they can allow contaminants into the intake that can ruin an engine (scoring the sides of the pistons, etc. "



Is the AFE Mega Cannon approved for our trucks? All info appreciated.

BHAF has a fleetgaurd part number (IE owned by Cummins). I do recall them not recommeding oiled air filters but some BHAF are non-oiled!

OK..... What are the advantages of a BHAF? I understand that if you add fuel, (Edge) or larger injectors you need more air-flow but is there an advantage for a stock truck besides the visual cool or hearing your turbo more on spool up?

With a BHAF does your turbo spool FASTER? Just looking for info. They sound great but do they help over the stock airbox?

Unless you are putting out HP north of 400 I doubt you will see much improvement with a BHAF. I am running Mega cannons on both my trucks. I replaced a BHAF on my 99 with the Cannon. It sounds better and the yellow cover (filter condom) is cool looking. Oo.

If you're running pure stock, I'd stick with a stock Fleetguard filter and only change it when the filter minder pulled down to the half way point or so. It will take a long time in normal driving for this to take place.



A BHAF is a dry paper filter that's normally used on larger trucks and industrial applications. It is a substantially larger filter than the stock filter on our trucks, flowing 50 to 100% more and it doesn't carry the potential liabilites of the oiled filters Cummins discourages.

Just pull the snorkel, run the fleetguard stock element w/out the foam insert, and live happily ever after (or until you get mad HP mods). Couple of weeks ago when I bought my TTPM the guys at DD yanked out my snorkel while they were installing the TTPM. I've read about how it can be removed for benefitial EGT reduction but never did it.



Last weekend I towed by travel trailer that weighs around 9k up and down some big west coast hills on a 600 mile round trip and my EGTs were no where near 900 post-turbo (danger zone).





Of course theirs always the "cool factor" and if you've got the money and you're ok with the concept of oiled filters or the Fleetguard BFAH setup I say go for it. As far as bang-for-the-buck I don't think you'll get much (or need any) perforcemence enhancement in the EGT area yet.

BHAF suck, ... . hot air that is, and hot air is not good. I pulled my motor apart the other day,. it had 110K on it and u could still see the hone marks from when they assembled it. I live in a very dusty area and the trcuk is always on the ranch. I've run K&N and Afe from day one. Either one is the way to go, especially with ANY hp upgrade.

The first engine mod I made other than gauges was the installation of a BHAF. Towing our 5th wheel (21,180 GCW versus 21,500 GCWR), stock pre-turbo EGTs would reach 1300 degF maximum. If adding the BHAF to the stock engine reduced EGTs at all, I couldn't see it. No better, but no worse.



With the truck in its current configuration (see signature), maximum EGTs when towing have dropped to 1100 degF at 32 PSIG boost versus 22 PSIG boost when stock. Based on my experience, the EZ (with boost elbow) and 4" exhaust get the credit for this reduction. How would it run now if I reinstalled the stock airbox and filter with the higher airflow? Dunno... . never tried it.



I guess my point is that I didn't see any performance gain with a BHAF on a stock truck. I would suspect you'd have to increase airflow markedly before you'd see a difference in actual performance between the stock setup and a BHAF.
