Yes, I've seen it before. Still a great post.

My question is What is it used for????

big cargo ship engine. a buddy at work use to work big engines like that when he worked out at sea. the turbo will be massive, but because it is 2 cycle, i want to see them blowers they use. i think they are electric blowers on them, they provide the scavenging air until the turbo spools up:-laf

That has to be for power generation. It's in a building, and that's where it would stay. Anyways, that it too big for a ship I would think. I would imagine they would (and do) use multiple smaller engines instead of one that big.

Well it's defenitly to big for a ship. I would guess that they are trying to figure out how to produce electricity to power their country. Anyway the largest ship in the world (i just saw this on modern marvels two days ago and the name escapes me) uses 4 1000 cu. in. turbod diesels.

AND I WANT ONE TOOOOOOO

Latest version is 14 clyinders and 108,000 horsepower! Sulzer Wartisla is in a horsepower race with MAN diesel engines. No camshafts, exhaust valves are actuated with hydralics, might be where Navistar got the idea.

Used in container ships and tankers,,,,

:)

Now that would be a Dodge conversion project!! Ford and GM really couldn't argue too much then!. I think I could fit it in there... but I'm not sure if I could also fit the 10' diameter Carter lift pump :D

Seriously though, I had no idea this existed. I'd give just about anything to participate in a rebuild.

Big New York rat on a treadmill. :D

Can you imagine having to do a head gasket job on that monster?

If I would'nt have been so distracted by the pictures in the first link, then I would have read the first sentence where it says it's a prime mover engine. Ooops.

That thing is just plain amazing. I wonder what it fells like to be in control of the ship those go in?

Just as a note:

The words prime mover does not mean that the item an engine is in has to move. The engine on a generator is a prime mover also.

compressed air probably. . yes this one could be a land based power generation engine, but i think it is going on a ship. one thing that is pretty cool about large ship diesel 2 cycle engines, is when they reverse direction, the engine is stopped, and then reverse started. if it has hydraulic powered valves, it is real easy to fire them up backwards. if it is older and has cams, the cams are moved back a bit to let a second set of cam lobes designed for reverse operation to engage the valves. just something i learned from my buddy former ship chief engineer. .
