Big air intake?

Ordered the tape for Thunder in Muncie diesel pulls and drags. I noticed some of the serious pullers had a massive air intake mounted under the front bumper, similar in size to a semi-air filter/intake. How does this set-up work for everyday driving, or is it a pulling-only set-up? How does it compare in performance to the AFE units?
