I am wondering how to get that big rig sound from my truck. Is this a by product of straight piping? Is it possible with an auto to get this sound? My wife thinks I'm nuts, but I love that sound.

Travis

Changing your exhaust will affect the sound. I have a 4 inch from Jannetty Racing and it produces a big rig-ish character sound. Sort of like a big rig, kinda growlish near walls, sounds like a giant snoring in other areas. Sounds good to me, that's all that matters :) .

straight pipe it, ditch the silencer ring, and put an open air filter on it... it won't sound quite as good as a truck w/ a manual transmission, but it'll be as close as you're gonna get without putting stacks on it :D

I have ta admit the sound these engines make is,,,,,, special! Even my wife likes the sound when we're cruising along the interstate. She says the hum it makes just lulls her to sleep. My favorite is when you approach a down grade at highway speed and take your foot off the pedal and start to coast. She makes a kind of purring sound!!!! Just love the sound of that Cummins!!!!!!!!

I love all the sounds! LOL! in the 1500-1900 range, my truck really could be confused w/ a big truck... the sound of the turbo turns lots of heads of people looking over real quick expecting to see a big truck next to 'em!! letting off and coasting sends pure turbo whistle out the exhaust pipe... it's LOUD!

I love it... seriously considering putting stacks back on! LOL!

I installed Rips' 4" exhaust with the Allied muffler. This exhaust sounds awesome especially with the Silencer Ring removed & lots of air( ProGaurd 7)

Clay :D

If you really want people to think you are bigger than you are... change the exhaust housing to a 16cm. My buddy tells me that my little truck sounds like his 97 Peterbilt... . It has the big rig exhaust flutter sound. .

My favorite part is when you get up to about 2100 or 2200 when it has a very loud and cracky sound right before a shift. Its the gratest :-laf !!!!!!

I have gotten more attention over the sound of my truck, just ONE of the benifits of a Cummins.

I was going through town with a convertable with 5 girls beside me, we pulled to the light, they all looked, giggled, and one spoke up and said "wow, your truck is loud", and they all just laughed. :D

A straight piped Cummins (no matter what size motor) sounds good. The old N/A 7. 3s sound pretty good striaght piped too. They really cackle when ya get them wound up.

Also being a diesel mechanic spending lots of time around exhaust fumes a Cummins smells the best to me. It's kinda weird, I know but maybe I have spent TOO much time around the fumes.

Stacks are the only way to go for real rig sound. I have a 4" down pipe and resonator then all 5". It is important to keep a smooth, even, direct, flow. No radical twists and turns and especially no square tubing. Go with the flow

I removed the cat (for testing) & the stock cracked muffler this evening.

I had to fire it up with it open & the turbo whistle is very noticable like a large rig. I put the Walker 214698 muffler in & it still has the turbo whine/whislte, but not as loud, sounds very good, but I have not driven it yet.

Hehe... I had mine straight piped for a few weeks while testing the cat. The pipe emptied under the passenger seat- and I can honestly say it did NOT sound like a big rig. More along the lines of a jet engine! This is a stock truck, I can't imagine what it would sound like turned up a little!

Andy

mine really does sound like a bigger truck in the lower RPM range... obviously sounds different, especially w/ so much time between gears, and when you get over ~2000rpm, it sounds different, but w/ the big turbine side and the straight 5" single pipe, it really does sound bigger than it is... I wouldn't quite say "big rig", but it sounds closer to a big rig than just about anything short of...

the stacks didn't sound quite like this... the single pipe gives the tone a little sharper edge... the stacks were kinda smoothed out a little... it sounded like a "baby big rig" The single straight 5" actually does sound like a bigger truck... not a big 18 wheeler w/ a 14+ liter motor obviously, but like a bigger dump truck w/ an 8-11 liter motor.

I have to agree cummins dose smell the best really not sure why but, on that note I would say the small cat's ford has smell the worst.
