Why turn an Edge EZ box down?

Can you run an 04 without a muffler??

My buddy with a DMAX sent me this:

Pull Off Link

All I know is when I was truck shopping I pulled the local hill with my boat the same day, and the Dodge went 5mph faster than the DMAX. Matter of fact, the DMAX had the benefit of cooler morning air.

And how much more did the Chevy guy pay for his truck?

Is the Duramax rated for 350,000 miles?

Why the Suncoast upgrade to the Allison? I thought they were bulletproof in stock form :p

With the difference saved I could bomb the daylights out of my Dodge and eat him for lunch.

Actually, with the rebates last summer the Chevy was $1000 more than a similarly equipped Dodge.

After driving/towing with them both, I would have bought the Dodge if was $1000 more. .

The Allison is only rated 425hp I believe. I'm not sure anyone has rated the 48re yet. I did read that ATS was speculating that is was going to be able to take 400hp.

I wish they would have asked to use my truck to represent Dodge :p . With my PDR twins,DTT, and 4. 10 im sure my mph would have been pretty good with EGTS in check.

That sounds like some serious fun. I wonder if you have to be invited or if you can volunteer? The autos will probably shine in this type of pull, but if they raced to the top of Wolf Creek in Colorado or White Bird in Idaho, then back down again, I think I could compete. The cummins with the exaust brake is mo'better than the v-8 boys, especially with the 6-speed:) !!

Ck the latest issue of Motor Trend. They did a big towing comparo of the latest '04. 5 Ram 2500 SLT 4X4 QC SWB Cummins 600/48RE, '04 GMC Sierra CC SWB 4X4 DuraJap/Allison and Ford F-250 CC 4X4 SWB Harley-Davidson Powerscrote/auto. They pulled a 8500# (?) boat/trailer combo. The Cummins came in LAST. They ragged on the rough, unrefined, NOISY, character of the Cummins (it's for big-rig drivin', oil-under-the-nails types who wear big belt buckles only) and the lack of a five-speed auto. The Powerscrote came out on top.

If there are any questions as to which machine pulls best, those questions get answered at every truck pull. I like going to Terre Haute every August and watching Scheid's extravaganza. The V8s are fast in the drags, but when it comes to street-truck sled pulling, you can watch the Cummins go pretty close to full pull, Chevy go 20 to 30 feet shorter on average than the Dodges, and the Fords aren't even close.

You don't have to sell me... I bought a Cummins, LOL! I'm just repeating (paraphrasing, actually) what Motor Trend had to say. They made no mention of the fact that the Mopar was $5k cheaper than the Powerscrote and that the 6. 0 has been a disaster reliability-wise. They also misquoted the Cummins HP rating and while bashing the 48RE's lack of a 5th gear, forgot to mention that it has less failures per 100 units (as reported on this site a few months back) than the new Ford and the bottom-of-the-line Allison.

The problem I see with most all of this is the Allison bashing, need we be reminded that they are the king of the big truck world??? They have a new product and have had some issues with it. Name a manufacturer that hasnt. I work for a school district and all of our automatics are Allisons, we replace 2 a year on average in a fleet of 230+. Most of the routes are also mountainous, so what does that say about Allison??? Dodge transmissions have ALWAYS been there weak link but they are improving and how long have they been out? Allison will work out there issues and will have the best trans. in the class. (No need to talk about Fords it isnt even worth mentioning)

Stepping of my soapbox now... . :-{} Just a fan of Allison.

Allison makes a good trans, but don't confuse it with what's in your bus. It's a lighter duty version behind the DMax. My point is that the Allison trans has to be upgraded just like the Dodge trans when the bombing bug hits.

A few weeks ago at the ATS dyno there was a guy that was running 600+HP in a DMax. Clint had just finished a $7000 upgrade to the trans to get it to hold up.

I'm also a Allison fan... Krause :D

I have both an Allison in my 2003 dmax 4x4 and a 4 speed auto in my 04. 5 dodge 4x4. Trust me, the Allison is superior to the Dodge trans. I wish now I got a 6 speed for my cummins. I hate the fact it freewheels when I lift the throttle, and I wish it had one more gear. The tow haul sucks. How can Dodge call it tow haul when all it does is turn off the overdrive.

If you ever drive an Allison, hit tow haul and slow down. The automatic down braking is addictive, I use it all the time.

Wake up, dodge, you need a better automatic, and get rid of the freewheeling aspect of the trans.

Transmission braking is for the birds. I'll take a exhaust brake anyday. :)

yeah, a lot of good the exhaust brake does when the converter freewheels... Might as well turn off the engine, there's no difference.

Yeah, that would be stupid. Good thing it's really easy to lock up the TC! :) It's even built into the software on '04+ trucks.

not my 04. 5, the lock up disengages around 1800, and engine goes to 700, no matter what speed you are going. The exhaust brake for the AT is worthless in my opinion, but I can see it working for the 6 speed.

When I test drove the Dmax and Dodge I did not like the transmission braking feature, especially when empty. It should have been enabled only for tow/haul. I also didn't like the way the allison shifted when pulling the boat. Several times I could not get it out of third. Even lifting off the gas the transmission would not shift up. Add to that how noisy the Dmax is pulling a load and the Dodge won out.
