Competition Big Single's what's a good choice

Competition Piers, Thanks For The Great Head

I've heard that a 315/75r-16 will fit on our trucks. Mine is 4x4

and as you know, they sit pretty high. My question is, will this

size tire actually fit without modification? And what size spacer

would I need for the duals? I'd hate to buy 6 new sneakers

only to find out that they rub up front or won't fit at all.

Anybody in the know?

My opinion is that 255-85-16's are the largest tire you can put on a narrow 6" rim and still get a descent wear rate. Of coarse you can do as you please, but any larger and you will run the centers out of the tires. 255-85-16's will need a spacer, if you never tow and keep the at max psi you might be able to get by without one, but it seems stupid to go that route. Why have a 3500 if you can not haul anything with it, and the ride is crap with the tires at max psi.

You will hear others claim they run larger tires, but they also have terrible wear. Most just want to go big, and forget common sense. I maintain that if you can only afford to do so much, do that and be happy, I never did like anything halfassed.

The '01's have a differerent off-set than previous years, which allows you run a larger tire without a spacer. TDR member Dennis, "Partyat33" has 265's on his without a spacer, I saw it firsthand last weekend, seems to be plently of room between the tires, and looked great. I think he just got them on, so I'm sure he can't tell how they wear as of yet.

Thanks for the info. With all the weight on the front of our trucks,

the traction up front is awesome. But I have a lot of unplowed,

snow covered, dirt road to deal with. Uphill of course. I wanted

to get mud tires to deal with the snow. I will probably have to

wait until this coming fall now. (Layoffs at work)

LOL.....

I don't think the girlfriend's head would reach the rocker panel.

She has enough trouble getting into the 4x4 now.

255/85's

To keep the front end "In Check" i did a leveling kit, Dt track bar to center it all up , and a dss to true it all out. Absolutly never have rubbed up front ( Tested to all extreems I could up in the backwoods of Vermont) and loaded the rears have never touched.

I just looked up some Cooper tires. That Discover STT looks like

a nice aggresive tire. And it comes in load range E.

Some of the guys have a good point... the bigger tires will fit, but

they won't wear right. According to the Cooper website, the biggest tire that they recommend for a 6 inch rim is the 235.

255's

ive got 32000 on mine now and will get about another 4000 out of them. and i use them for work not looks. but i also rotated them every 4500 miles also pull alot with it bobcats, mini hoes, and my offroad car. very happy with the wear for a mud tire already have another set at the tire dealer waiting for me.

I've got 36,000 on my rear ones and they are still in awesome shape, I had a bad wheel bearing in the front and toasted one of them in 35,000 but the other was still about half tread. I've always gotten 50,000 out of the BFG MT 255's on my 3/4 ton by rotating them and should get 60-70,000 out of the rear ones on the dually and 40,-50,000 out of the front ones as long as the front end stays in good shape.

That's a lot of mileage in my book. I'd be happy with that.

I wonder how big I can actually go before I would start wearing the centers out.

I've been looking for spacers as well. I see that CorrecTrack makes spacers for the Ram van. I think this might work on the

pickup as well. I don't know who else makes a quality product

that I would trust using.

People are always saying why spend $160 apiece when you can get Mud King tires for $110 and they are the same thing? Well they are not and this is a good example of you get what you pay for. I'm not saying BFG's are the best but I've had great luck with them, and if it's $50 more bucks for almost double the mileage I guess it's worth it. My stock tires only made it 50,000 so if mud tires can go that far I guess they are doing pretty good, not to mention the BFG's are actually cheaper than the stock Michelins and get way better traction

I ran 255 BFG M/T on my '95 dually, and they looked great. The rear tires never touched with a 1/4" spacer from NAPA.

The 265/75/16's fit perfect. They are 1/2 wider than 'recommended' for a stock rim. I got them at Discount Tire for like $110. 00 each including mounting balancing stem and lifetime replacement. (Dominator Series) They are wearing exceptionally well. The traction is just OK, but its not bad. Overall I am very happy with them. With the 265's if you had a fifth wheel you might want about another 1/4" space in there for safety. I pull a 9500# TT and my tires do not squat. But that is only about 1000# tongue weight.

Front steering still needs some help. I have the front stabilizer bracket on, and that was a big improvement.
