I have 33k on my truck, so I knew the factory shocks were shot, but can't believe the new shocks made such a huge difference in steering.

Believe it, There are many suspension/steering BOMBs that change the driving experience drastically imo. Shocks are by far the most overlooked componant. The factory shocks are worthless when new and go downhill fast from there. If you want an even bigger improvement get rid of the stock tracbar for a DT tracbar.
My opinion on bang for the buck 4x4 suspension/steering BOMBs -
1) Shocks - Rancho adjustables or Bilstein. Also, dual shocks up front are necessary to overcome the weight of the mighty Cummins with softer, taller springs.
2) Tracbar - Tightens up the steering Pronto! DT, Lukes Link, etc...
3) Springs - Huge improvement! Skyjacker or National Spring and maybe others?. Don't overlook changing the rear springs, the front D25 Skyjacker coils help steering and ride, the rear leafs get rid of the ridiculous 5" lift block make a tremendous ride and handling improvement and get rid of wheel hop too.
4) Steering Box - Tessier steering box shaft brace. Have somone turn the steering wheel while you watch the output shaft of your steering box. The amount of slop in even a brand new steering box is surprising. Don't forget to do the steering box adjustments in the FSM either...
5) Steering damper - Factory piece isn't bad, but anything over 20K miles and you need a new one. They don't put those things on there for nothing...
6) Steering shaft - My stocker had 1/8" of play with only 30K on the odo, Flaming River or Borgeson make good ones imo...
7) Ball joints and tie rods - Have em checked every 50K miles.
