Whatever happened to the Syn Diesel from Coal????

I just made my first mini batch of Bio. I am still learning and experimenting but I plan on making and using my own fuel. I am just tired of paying 2. 50 + per gallon. It all depends if I can find enough WVO to do the job.

When makong Bio from WVO you Get abouit an 85 percent yield. Commercial producers can vary that yield, usually in favor of making other products. Ones that are more profitable.

How much waste oil is required to make a gallon of biodiesel?

from http://myweb.uiowa.edu/franke/BD2004.mht

5 gallons of soy bean oil (or waste fryer oil)

+ 1 gallon of methanol*

+ Household lye* (sodium hydroxide)

= 5 gallons of BioDiesel + 1 gallon of glycerin (used to make soap)

so depending on what you are looking for; 1 gal of WVO gets you 1 gallon of diesel, or 6 gallons of ingredients gets you 5 gallons of bio diesel (80% of ingredient volume)

(note the methanol is used in a chemical reaction, it isn't in the final fuel. Making bio isn't blending methanol with veg oil, don't try that. It's reacting to make different molecules)

DBond, very informative slideshow. So, I guess this isn't quite as simple as filtering WVO from a restaurant and filling up the tank?

No, for real bio diesel the oil has to go through a chemical conversion process. There are people doing the filtered WVO, called straight veg oil (SVO). It can work, at least for a while, but you have to heat the oil to 160F for it to flow well. It's easy to gel up your fuel system, unknown deposits left behind, unknown emmisions... interesting but experimental.

The bio diesel is ASTM spec'd, EPA approved, put it in the tank and go. (well watch the gel temp on it)

Just made my 2nd batch and everything seems to work as advertised. Now the next step I need to figure out how to test it before I put it in the tank and burn it??????

Recently we took a trip. Not knowing how available Bio-D would be I packed an extra 5gal can in the bed. As luck would have it I needed it and more. Stopped at a station and got regular #2 all over my hands. The pump handle was really covered with it. It never did really wash off, even after soap and water. :-{} Well eventually I broke out the Bio-D. This I also managed to get all over me. What a difference! The Bio-D washed right off, :p a little soap and water and it was gone. Just like light cooking oil when I BBQ. If I have to pack extra fuel Bio-D is the way to go. Oo.
