Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Crosshead question

2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission "wait to start light"

Well, after 2000 miles of pulling my 10k utility trailer w/ woodworking equip. and 4wd diesel tractor from Frederick, MD to our new home in Park City, UT, as I arrived in Park City on I-80 and waited at the light for the Rt. 40 exit, the light turned green and I hit the throttle and  no power and massive amouts of black smoke till the boost got up to around 10psi. After 10psi everything seemed to run fine till the next stop. I was meeting a friend w/ a DM to collect the dogs and had to ask him to follow me up to our neighborhood, thinking I wouldn't be able to get the trailer up there. By rolling the stop signs and keeping the revs up we made it. All gauges show normal. FP is 16 at idle 14 at acceleration. I put some F-1 1. 6 injectors in w/ the help of Iceman back in MD and they ran great all the way across the country and the week before. I noticed under load in WY that there was some smoke and at a fuel stop in Laramie that it smoked at take off. I ran the comp on 1/1 all of the way and turned it off when the problem got bad in PC. Any thoughts on where to begin to trouble shoot this thing. I'm going to change the oil and get the sample off, check the MAP sensor, set the throttle position sensor. FWIW No codes were thrown. TIA

Welcome to the west.

I came from Frederick also. My HO has smoked ever since arriving in Vegas - but no loss of power. Attribute it to altitude because I can drive to LA on the same tank and it is diminished.

Have you checked the intercooler boost hoses? The driver's lower likes to rub on sheet metal, and the passenger upper likes to rub on the AC pressure switch.

Otherwise sounds like the MAP.

Park City is about 5000' in elevation, isn't it? I think you're just seeing the effects of excess fuel in thin air. With big tires, an auto with a tall first gear, a heavy trailer, bigger injectors, and a decrease in air density will all add to the amount of smoke. And as you get up in elevation the rpm that your turbo lights off will also increase (no power, lots of smoke). How hot was it? Temperature will also aggrivate the situation.

With just an EZ I was dumping smoke like crazy in Denver with the trailer in tow. But once boost came up and the engine was getting enough air the exhaust cleaned up. Your injectors are moving more fuel than my EZ would, so I'd bet you'd see some smoke.

Unless you're seeing a large drop in peak boost (some drop may be noticed at altitude - I'm thinking as in blown intercooler boots) it sounds normal to me.

I'd think you would see less smoke with the Comp on 1x1 since it would be in de-fueling mode (probably would feel laggy as heck tho, since it would take forever to build the boost needed to ramp up the fueling).

Well, temps were about 75*. Not too bad. PC elev. is about 6700'. Our house is at 7200'. The truck felt better today w/o trailer and load in the truck. Still pretty smokey though. Felt like a sports car w/o 12-14K lb load hooked up to it. :D I need to research what I can do to reduce the smoke though. Anyone got some stock injectors they want to trade for some BD-1s?

Just changed the oil. Boots seem OK. Boost is down to 30psi instead of 34. Turbo has some additional discoloration, but doesn't seem to have any more 'play' than before. Will check MAP tomorrow when the truck is cold.

I'm guessing the scenery is a bit different than it was in MD? Ya gotta love the West.

Since you mentioned discoloration and a drop in peak boost, I'm guessing you still have the factory HY with the wastegate blocked. (?) You really can't get much quicker spool if that's the case (build boost earlier in the rpms to clear up smoke). How about a cam? They can be a bit pricey, especially if you have it installed, but they do clear up the smoke. I can run the Comp 1 or 2 sub levels higher than I could pre-cam and get about the same amount of smoke. And what I do get clears up more quickly. That could be an alternative if you don't want to give up the sticks.

I got my cam from Haisley's (a bit over $400) and installed it myself. Not too bad of a job. That would be the lower end of the $ scale if you're wanting to do the low cost thing. The upper end of the scale would be a couple of grand installed. I'd say the results were well worth $400, but I'd kinda feel bad about spending $2k.

PC12Driver,

Yes, the scenery is just a bit different :D The weather in MD s*cked this summer. Glad to finally be out of there. $400 isn't bad for a cam, but I don't have time to do it anytime soom. Too much stuff to do to the house to prepare for winter. I've also got folks asking me to do work for them pretty soon. Early Oct playtime is over. Will just have to deal w/ the truck for the time being.

2-ND Time, 15lb. max??! Doesn't sound right to me. Of course usually if you mention 30-34psi out of a HY, someone jumps in with a question about drive pressures or something. It's proably not ideal, but it's been running for about 140k miles out of the 184 k miles on the the truck that way.
