I have 98 12 valve Seem to have a lot of black smoke . I live at sea level. I also spend a lot of time in the mountans It really smokes a lot when I am in the mountans I had a new motor put in about a 10,000 miles ago. my son followed me on a trip and he said it seems to be smoking all the time i am towing a 5th wh.

But even when I am not towing it smokes a lot Any help would be nice

You could try adjusting the AFC starwheel back some that should lower you smoke some. Just don't backe it off to much you will lower your low end power alot.

It won't hurt anything as long as your egt's stay down. but you will get a little bit better fuel milage if you turn it down. the afc sits right on the back of the fuel pump. it's an 8mm allen wrench plug with a copper washer under it(don't lose the washer) . the star wheel you can turn with a small stright blade screw driver. to tighten it turn it towards the driver side. optimal fueling you get some gray somke on take off

Do a search on the AFC (Air Fuel Control). There is a lot to know about the AFC adjustments. Fortunately, they are not adjustments that will leave you beside the road if done incorrectly. Actually they are more intimidating than they are difficult.

The star wheel is but one of four adjustments.

Before doing any adjustment you should check to make sure that the there are no air leaks in the system between the turbo and air horn. Make sure all the clamps are tight and the boots have no worn places that may be leaking.

Boost and EGT.

AFC adjustments need to be monitored with EGT gauge.

Any loss of boost would be noticed immediately with a boost gauge.

I'm thinking you don't have gauges, and that the smoke is a from too little boost caused by boost leak.

And BTW how did the other engine die?

motor blown

I was on a trip when all of a sudden without any warning it just quit with a bang It had 120,000 miles. Had it towed to a dealer and they said the back cylinder went dry. Never could get an answer why. they said it may have been the oil filter. Asked them yo save it so I could check it out. Three weeks laterwhen I went to get it . they had thrown it away . So $8,400. 00 I have no way of finding outI did have a small leak by the timming chain cover and had it checked out and said it would be ok untill I get back.

I asked because it's so rare. That is the second #6 crap out I've read about recently (at low mileage too). I consider anything under 250k to be low mileage. I'd be raising 13 kinds of hell about not getting my busted engine back--ESPECIALLY since it was a non-warranty issue.

Good luck with this one.

Repeat after me--NO QUICK LUBES, NO FRAMS, NO QUICK LUBES, NO FRAMS...
