How long does it normally take to get an oil analysis back from Blackstone Labs? I sent mine in by USPS the week before Christmas and have not heard anything yet. I know it was the Holidays and the weather has been pretty bad.

I can't swear to this, but seems like it was about 10 days. Not too bad, considering mail usually takes 3 to 5 days one-way to my location. Give 'em one more week, then call 219-744-2380 and ask where it is! My guess is that the US PO was slow on the front end due to all us last minute Chistmas mailers!

HMMmmm - Manteca... Where I lived for about 13 years before moving up here to Vacaville - I was the pressman at the Manteca bulletin back in those days... My bro-in-law and family and mother-n-law are still there...

ANYWAY, would be interested in hearing how your analysis checks out - and how MUCH oil do you have to supply for their test? How much $$$$... ?

dieselburner, I have them e-mail me mine back and I have it back in about5 days after mailing it to them. The snail mail responce is better than three weeks out.

I also sent my first sample "snail mail" and it took about three weeks for the return results. As a side note, they do indicate that they will contact the sender a. s. a. p. if they find a problem. All in all, great folks. I had a question on my results and they went out of their way to help.

I also use Blackstone labs for my oil analysis. I sent in my first sample from Godzilla about mid-December, and got the results back last week. I used them for about a year on my old 1987 Ford 6. 9L diesel before buying Godzilla last September, and about 3 weeks is normal.

They send you a small plastic bottle which holds about maybe 4 ounces of oil? Close to about 1/3 of a beer can I'd say. They charge $16 per sample. They give you a really nice breakdown on all the different particles/contaminents found in your oil, and a comparrison list of all samples taken to date from similar engines so you can compare your engine to others. They also give you a nice verbal description of their findings. For example, they told me it looks as though my valves are almost fully seated and looks like the engine is almost fully broken in at about 6100 miles (this was actually my second oil change, first one done at 2500).

Hope that helps add a little info for you.

Tom

Do they (or ANY of the labs) ask for or take into account any oil or fuel additives that the owner might use that could affect the oil analysis? I use fuel additives pretty regularly, as well as STP oil treatment, and assume some of their composition might show up in a lab inspection - and perhaps different brand oils have slightly different characteristics as well?

Hi Gary, Blackstone Labs has a comments section on the form that you fill out when sending in your oil sample. You could tell them in that area what your additives were. They also ask pertinent questions in the form such as what type of oil you run, how many miles since last change out, if you added any oil since last change, and some others that I can't remember right now. 13 years in Manteca huh? I've been here 14 years now. From Livermore originally.

I've been sending mine to Blackstone. They do a good job. The 1st one that I sent took a long time. I thought the post office lost it, but it finally showed up a couple weeks later. Usually it takes 4-5 days turnaround by snailmail.

I also tried the Titan kit from K-mart just to compare. They were mismarked at $4. 00. I wouldn't give 4 cents for another one. They use an A B C rating scale, no real numbers in ppm to compare.

Remember to tell Blackstone you're TDR member, it'll get you a discount. #ad

Thanks for the heads up, I think. I bought several Titan kits for $1. 60 each at the local K mart when they closed up a couple of months ago. I was afraid they wouldn't be a real quality product, but the price was right. I have less than $10 invested in the 1/2 doz kits I bought, so I am not out much.

Did you get any valuable information at all, or is it not even worth sending mine in?
