We replace a power steering pump on a friend's '97 yesterday and would like to know if there are any tips/tricks to bleed the power steering and hydroboost assembly. We started the truck and let it idle for around 30 second and there wasn't any fluid being pushed though the lines even though they weren't hooked up. Is this normal? We plan on jacking the front end up to take the weight off of the tires and trying again.

This is the first 12 valve truck I've worked on so any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for the replies and Merry Christmas:D

Jack it up and with engine running turn steering wheel back and forth lock to lock, add fluid as needed, that should do it. bg

When I did mine I did as above and it took probably 30-40 lock to lock. I rechecked the fluid every ten or so. Then I took it for a test drive and rechecked and needed to add a bit more.

Jack truck front axle up so tires are off the ground. Start engine and go slowly side to side, all the way to bump stop and activate relief valve several times. Add oil as necessary.

We had one that we had to turn side to side with engine OFF. This was what finally pushed the air out after much frustration.
