Blended / Treated Diesel Fuel

I was in Lethbridge Alberta Canada today talking to one of our customers who had 3 or 4 rigs outside that were gelled up and they were waiting for space in their shop to bring them in and warm them up... .



I was talking to the owner... he's 81 and mentioned that all the rigs outside were from the US and were owned buy people who had no idea that diesel could gel... as we talked he mentioned that the Alberta Province has a program where the govt. sets dates that the fuel distributors have to blend or treat their fuel for the winter... he didn't know the standard, but said in the last 25 years he's not seen an Alberta Farmer or trucker in with a truck that had gelled up... so the program must be working... for me... the low temp was -2 *F on this trip so far... as I pulled into the motel tonight it was 5*F.



He's sure that the program is country wide... . and no one worries about it now... but everyone he's talked to is worried about the ULSD and what it might do to the old systems that require those chemicals that have been removed for lube... .



Just interestning conversation that I didn't know and thought you'd like to know. .

Not that it was that cold, but I had a Duramax owner approach me tonight and ask me if all the diesel pumps were diesel pumps... he told me this was the first time he had put fuel in a diesel before... looked like a new truck. I told him they were all the same except the nozzle size (in case he had a "ford-like" truck that would not accept those large nozzles. He was happy about that.



I also asked if he was running fuel additive... he looked at me like I had three heads. He asked why, and I told him. I don't know if he will add any, but at least he is informed.

In a word, "STANADYNE"!! Keeps the gelling at bay for anyone that travels from the sunny south to the cold north this time of year!!

Stanadyne works for me. Just last week ran from Bismarck to Minneapolis at sub-zero until about Sauk Center. Minneapolis was about 30 something. Different story going home. Anyhow, that Bismarck to SaukCenter was #2 and Stanadyne with no problems what so ever.

I have used treated fuel with additives and mixed #1 and #2. Haven't had gel problems with either, but get poor mpg with the #1 formula. Doc

I started gelling up at 5 degrees F using ULSD with pre-ULSD Stanadyne Performance Formula! Bought the fuel in KY at Flying J and decided to use up some of my last pre-ULSD Stanadyne. Figured it would work okay with either ULSD or LSD. Later when temps dropped, engine started gelling up, and was able to pull over and it idled okay. Had some ULSD Stanadyne, so I tried double dosing it. Let it idle for about 15 minutes and took off with no more problems. Later drained fuel in filter and checked filter, both looked okay.

Not sure if this has happened to others, but I certainly will make sure I use only ULSD Stanadyne from now on!

In West Yellowstone MT ,last Saturday -47 ,thats cold, I was their Last year it was -42 ,Every Diesel in the Parking Lot was gel up Big Time. Most wouldn't even start. I ran My truck in the underground Parking at the Grafwolf. It was -42 on Saturday and the following Tuesday +44. In Mn its up to the Stations,Some did not have Arctic/Premium until Dec,It was mild until than. I think that even 50/50 blended may be problematic at-15. Arctic or Premium is tested to -30 minimum.
