I usually change my filter when the engine is cold. But today I switched to amsoil and their flush procedure requires the filter to be changed hot.
While removing the hot filter I touched the back of the alternator and the sparks flew. My son says I probably blew a fuse. He says they were talking about this on the TDR forum some time back.
All the gauges and everything seem to work, but he said it don't matter, the batteries are going to go dead.
He don't remember what fuse they were talking about. Does any one here know??

It should be the alternator fuse in the fuse box under the hood. I think that it's a 120 amp fuse. ( and I don't think that they are cheap either )

Thanks you guys. I pried the top off that 140 amp fuse and it don't look blowed to me. Its shiny silver strip looks all intact.

I did that once on my old 12valve with a oil filter wrench. Sparks flew but did no damage, no blown fuse, just freaked me out.
If everything works you probably won't have any problems. #ad

There is a TSB regarding the unprotected B+ on the back of the alternator for model year 2000:

Service Bulletin Number: 082300
Bulletin Sequence Number: 141
Date of Bulletin: 0006
NHTSA Item Number: SB614160
Make: DODGE TRUCK
Model: RAM
Year: 2000
Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Summary: SUBJECT REGARDING PLASTIC BOOT TO PROTECT THE ELECTRICAL HARNESS B+ END TERMINAL AT THE GENERATOR. *TT

The above is from the NHTSA website. Does it apply to 1998. 5?

Thanks again all you guys and you too Jetson, I will do just that.

Throwed a set of jumper cables in the back and drove it to Cody today, 70 miles one way.
The clock needed reset and the trip meter was shocked to 0, so I did a zero to 60 to see if the EZ was OK 11. 6 seconds, so it must be.

Thanks again for the quick responses.
