Well it seems there is not a lot of threads here in the Gen 1 forum so I will entertain you with this little issue. :-laf

Right before I pulled the 90 off the road (6 weeks ago) for the NV 5600 swap I started to develop a blinker issue. Sometimes it would blink and you would hear the click, other times you would just see the dash indicator go solid.

I replaced the blinker doohickey :D on the fuse panel and tried it yesterday to ensure a good install before back on the road. It failed.

Light stays solid and no clicking.

Thoughts?

Robert

Have you checked your grounds... . at light assemblies, body to frame, etc. ?

Just a thought... blinkers are low amp draw and dirty ground can affect them before other things. Just a thought.

I was hoping no one would say the word ground... . ;)

Valid thoughts..... Man that could be a lot of grounds to check! :(

LOL

Robert

Something keeps rolling around in my head (it's got a lot of room up there ) regarding the multi function switch. My multi function switch went bad a few years ago and if I remember correctly when I would start my truck the dash turn signal lights would come on and stay while the truck was running. Might be worth a look.

Niick & Robert have good suggestions, if you want to go there first. I think the "multi-funtion switch, robert mentioned is in the column. As my column is still an 86 model, I don't have that problem. I have a plain old turn signal switch (which needs to be replaced) If you do go after the "ground" thing, use the old "Kiss" formula. "Keep It Simple Stupid" formula means start at most logical point. Your problem is in the lights, so check those grounds first. Also, I believe there are two flasher units on the fuse block. One for Turn Signals and a seperate one for Hazards. Did you try them both? Good Luck,

Jim

My guess is you got a bad or loose blinker sylinoid .

You said youreplaced it ? Did you replace it with the elcheapo

metal one ? or did you you replace it with the heavy duty plastic

housed one that is a lot heavier and use can see the circuitry in it ?

If not get one of those and take some electricle cheaner and clean the slots .

A simple test is switch with the other one for the 4 way . if it works you know the problem does the 4 way work alright ? mine are a littel work the slots so i zip tied or used black tape to help hold them in place , i was on a trrip and mine acted up i was at a truck stop , i bought the exspensive ones and it fixed the problem.

LOL I will keep this in mind.

Some flashers will not blink if you have one bulb burnt out. Make sure they all work.

Nick

All bulbs should be good as I just replaced and would not be both sides then!

Nevermind the blinker doohickey... we wanna know about the NV5600 swap:D

Nick

Oh, it is nice! :D BIG job (just over 100 hours to do it!) but it is nice! Hope to have something up in the next day or two on that.

Yeah, I was afraid of grounds being an answer... . ;)

Yes, 4 ways work. And I did not get the cheap crapper. I dont do cheap parts n my truck. I want it to run trouble free.

I will try cleaning the slots. Valid point if the 4 ways work.....

If the hazards work, try swapping the relays and see if that fixes it. Also, with the 4 ways on, do a walk around and make sure all the bulbs are working properly. My next guess would be the trailer plug. After that, the bulb plugs. Just because they are new lights, doesn't mean they fit properly... . or were installed properly... :D

Afterthought... did you replace any of the front side marker lights with LED? Or at all? The fronts ground through those lights... ... .

There are two flasher relays, I called solenoids... . one runs 4 ways, the other turn signals... . if you remove 4 way flasher relay, turn on 4 ways, brake lights no workie..... :D Anyway, if the 4 way flasher is good and flashing, putting it in the turn signal slot verifies it's not the flasher that's bad.

Well been a monkeying around the last few days and it seems the new relay is crapped! Thats why when replaced it still doesnt work!

And yes all lights work. Have run it a bit now with the relay from the crew (great, pulling more parts off the truck than putting on it! LMAO) and no issues. Tomorrow will be the test though. 500 mile drive..... :)

Hay new here and I'm having the blinker problem .
4 ways work.. brake lights work ..
When brake lights are on/lit up. I can get the tailight to flash as I move the signal switch to flash the lights (in the rear only) However they will not flash.
Switched out flasher from the 4 ways and it works in the 4 ways but not in the left-right version . Still no flash and nothing is happening out front
Any ideas please?

A hundred hours on the transmission swap-you're making me feel better about mine ('92 W-250 auto to NV-4500)...I've been derailed by rotted out rear brake lines now. #@$%!

Of course it seems that I'm fixing a bunch of stuff besides concentrating on the transmission!

Glad you got the blinker fixed.

Welcome to the forums!

First thought....you may be wiser to post this in a new thread so people can see there is a new question. Posting in an old thread will make it get overlooked easily.

As for your question, are you sure the front bulbs work at all?

Sounds like the multi switch in the dash.... have you tried working it back and forth rapidly multiple times? With the age of these trucks, I see a lot of them that the grease has dried up and caused lost contact, as well as some that get dirt in the contacts, causing some corrosion, sometimes, too....

So I found the problem
The number 9 fuse had pushed out the back and wasn't making a conection . Seems the previous owner had the trailer brakes pluged into a plug/terminal that was plugged into the top of the fuse box and had broken the keeper for the feed terminal to the number 9 fuse .
Discovered after following the wiring schematic. Epoxyed the terminal back in and problem solved...
Thanks

When I had this same problem, I finally tracked it down at the socket for the front turn signal bulb. The little spring-loaded pin was intermittently grounding out on the spring. I disassembled both of them and slipped some shrink tube over the pin. Haven't had the issue come back for at least a year now.
