I searched the forums for info but could not find any. How do we know if our 2000 has the block-53 pattern and if so what is the next step.

If you had actually searched the forum you would have already found more information than you care to read including digital photos of the 53 and where it can be found.

if it is a 53 block there will be a 53 stamped on the block. on the drivers side it should be under the injection pump.

Thank You very much AWeiman I appreciate the answer. And and HBarlow I had searched for info on the block 53 and all I got was there was no results matching my search Your attitrude will give TDR members a bad name.

you are welcome. i hope for your sake its not a 53. however some people never have issues with the 53 block. had a friend that sold one with almost 200k and no issues to that point.

I just tried a search for "53 block" and the results were terrible.

So I tried again, using "53 block" as the search term, then directly underneath that change the choice from "Search Entire Posts" to "Search Titles Only", and then down to the right select either "Search All Open Forums" or for more specific results select "Turbo Diesel Topics 2nd Generation".

Hit search, you will get thousands of relevant threads to view.

When you do it like that you can say that you have searched the site. :D

Mike. :)

You can't search for the term "53" although the search engine doesn't tell you that (it just drops the term).

You can use Google to search for "cummins block 53" and get some good sites on the subject. Or a person can search the engine forum for "crack block".

its not worth the stress of worrying about it these motors are so well engineered, even IF they crack, you can drive them for years (if you seal the crack with JB weld or monkey dung or chewing gum, you get the drift) I made the worst move in memory by selling my '99 that was in showroom condition,5,000$ trans , lifted, big tires, all the usual engine work, (turbo, exhaust, injectors fuel box, etc)loved the truck, BUT, crawled under it one day and BAM! there was the dreded 53! me being a maintenance freak and a worrier, I just couldn't get past the horror stories of blown 12,ooo$ motors, so I sold it with only 91,000 miles on it, the dealer sold it and knows the guy personaly, he now has over220k on it, no problems (I miss that truck) so even if it does have the 53, dont obsess over it, better yet, dont look for the "53"

The other day I got a letter in the mail which was about a class action lawsuit against Cummins. To qualify for it you must have a 53 block and it must been cracked and repaired, in order to receive any compensation. Lucky my 98 don't have a 53 block.

And again, two threads in a row I've read, two threads in a row where Harvey was being an ***.

You like to think I'm some new kind of TDR member who is ruining the site, but in reality your attitude sucks and while you frequently know the answers to "stupid" questions, instead of helping a newer member out you belittle them with snide remarks.

However, since you've said you have me on your ignore list, I'm guessing the message won't get through.

I've got a 99 with a 53 block

I have a 1999 with a 53 block. I have almost 270,000 miles and no crack yet. I have RV275 injectors & a edge EZ. I don't do a lot of pulling or hard driving either.

My 99 has a "53 block". I have 160,000 do a lot of towing, try not to tow with it cold. If im leaving with 5er 1st thing in morning I always plug it up(even in summer),when camping in I take a short drive before hooking up.

Don't know if it matters but figure not heating the block up fast may help.
