My friend just bought a new '04 & asked me where the block heater was because he couldnt find the plug. I looked at his engine & could not find the plug & looked where mine is on the right side of engine almost half way back. There was no block heater. Are the newer engines in the same place? I saw what appeared to be a plug at that location. Is it an option? Mine came with the purchase so I thought they all came with them installed. Is the plug that I'm looking at the place where the block heater should be?

Block Heater Cord

The block heater cord is what you have to order from the factory or buy form the dealer. The engine should already have the heater installed, but you may have to buy the cord that hooks up to it in order to plug it in. As far as I know the heater is installed on the passengers side of the engine and about 3 or so freeze plugs from the front of the engine. Hope this helps. Ken Irwin

He has the heater, he may not have the cord. Buy the cord from the dealer or Cummins. The heater is just behind the oil filter on these engines, if you lean over the engine it can be seen looking down between the exhaust manifold runners of cylinders 1 & 2.
