My block heater seems to have bit the big one, anyone out there with an OHM meter give me a resistance reading on thiers at the plug.

Thanks,

I just went out there & checked mine. It read 20. 2 ohms. It's been on for about 3 1/2 hours if that makes any difference. Hope this helps.

Thanks Guys!!!!!!! Mine has 18. 5 Ohms cold. I just plugged it in here at work and will recheck it hot, if it gets hot.

Thanks again,

Dee

Thanks to all that posted. My resistance hot is 24. 6 ohms. Yes it works the problems was with the extention cord I was using. This last week end my better half used it to vacuum out her car and after that it didn't work. It's the way she unplugs things I'm sure. (just pull on the cord)

Thanks guys!!!!!!!!!!

Beware of cheap Chinese ex cords that they sell in hardware stores etc. I've had two brand new cords that didn't work, took the first one back and they told me that it happens all the time. What causes the problem is the plastic on the female end covers the contacts inside, easy to fix with an X-acto knife, but figureing out the problem lies in your new cord is the hard part if you're not aware. Bet they sell a lot of new electric lawn mowers to people that buy these cords.

Since the topic of block heaters has come up, I have a question. For the past 2 nights I have used the block heater and everything worked great, but last night when I plugged in the heater, I heard a hissing sound coming from the block. I thought that the block was warm the reason that it was doing that, so I unplugged it and waited about 2 hours for it to cool down. And again she hissed when I plugged it in. I checked resistance and it showed about 18 when the block was warm. I did not notice if there was a hissing sound the other 2 nights that I used the heater. And I do not have any coolant leaks. .
Whats going on???

Rick

Rick,

My heater normally hisses for a while (just a few minutes) after being plugged in. It then goes silent. If yours is hissing all the time, I'm not saying that it is defective -- just that it is different from what mine does.

Question not the hissing. Do ask yourself, "Am I consuming any coolant?; Is the engine not warm on a cold morning?". If you can answer yes to either of these questions, you may have a problem. If not, welcome to Cummins B series 101. #ad

I keep a close watch on the coolant levels and the oil levels in both our vehicles. But for that matter all the fluid levels and I watch for tell tale signs of leaks. When I did use the block heater for the first time a few days ago, I did not notice the hissing sound, but after using the heater for 2 nights, the hissing started. I think what I will do is just replace it!! By replacing the block heater, it will give me an chance to replace the upper and lower radiator hoses while I have the coolant out and also I can replace the coolant.

thanks for the tracks on the block heater and Ohm readings. After 4 years of use, my heater just started blowing the house breaker. i verified it is not the timer, need to check the extension cord. then of course the heater.
