can someone tell me what exactly does the block heater heat up on my 96? does it heat the engine coolant or the motor oil? is there some kind of heating element in the engine?

FAN:

The block heater is a 700 watt element located on the right side of the engine below the exhaust manifold next to the oil cooler. It warms the engine coolant providing easier engine starting and faster warm-up in low temperatures. I normally use mine when the outside temp gets below 40 degrees F.

ok thanks, so its alright to use the heater on a regular basis? i have been told by a diesel mechanic that if i start to use it on a regular basis that my truck will not start without it.

That mechanic didn't know what he was talking about. All it does is keep the coolant warm. I usually plug mine in if it is going to be below 30.

FANZDSLPWR,

I plug my heater in 5 days @ week for up to 16 hours in the winter. After a long day in the big truck, its nice to know the little truck will start easy & warm up quick. Oo.

Good luck with the snow job we are sending you this weekend!! :D

Why I like my block heater

The best part about using the block heater is that the defroster works right away :) . No driving the truck looking through a small hole in the fog on the inside of the windshield when I leave my driveway
