I noticed this today. Apparently the only thing keeping my 12V from dumping all the oil out onto the road is a piece of stuck gasket.

I was amazed to notice the stamped steel block inspection plate on the driver's side behind the pump had actually bent/ warped, etc. The gasket is still in place and stuck to the block (thank God).

Have you guys ever seen one do this? BTW the inspection plate bolts are still in place, the plate is just warped outward, away from the block. The truck is not running hot, in fact it has never run better (344,000 miles).

I think what you are seeing is the noise insulation that has begun to come loose and sag. Mine did the same thing, there are 2 studs on the plate that have nuts and washers holding the insulation. I took the insulation off.

So there is another plate under the gasket looking material, or that is a recess packed with insulation? And the plate that is warped is only designed to hold the insulation in place?

Yes, the lifter gallery cover is under the insulation. The insulation is just a noise damper and that whole thing can look weird after enough heat cyles. Unless you have oil pouring out form under it, it should be fine.

Thanks big relief. I made the mistake of assuming it was build like my Detroit, under the plates is the inside of the engine!

No oil is coiming out at all, apparently it is just the insulation cover plate warping. There is still plent of oil leaking out of the crappy valve cover gaskets but I am accustom to that... . keeps the underside of the truck rust free.

Thanks Guys.

I have have had great luck w/ the valve covers. Reused them many times. never leaked. The newer gray ones are supposed to be even better.
