well i blocked off my radiator except for an 8. 5 inch round hole in front of the fan , and 2 2. 875 holes right behind the trans cooler , i also drilled a hole in the rear of my stock airbox to pull in some underhood warmer under hood air , and my fender snorkel is in the basement .

while out tonite , 27 degrees F , i looked at my EGT while cruise was set at 70 , flat road , my EGT was reading 550 , usually it would be 650 - 700 . i was reading threads on the engine actually running to cool , with the radiator blocked it now only takes 2 miles instead of 7 to come up to 190 coolant temp . think my fuel mileage came back some as it is probably down to 16 from 19 on my city/highway commute .

question i guess is a winter front of some sort the next item ? i was thinking of just making something out of lexan and install it behind the grille , power was always good with 700 egt , lately i have to pop on the power edge to show unruly brand xers , a new gmc gasser today , my tailights ...

opinions and comments please.

As an artic 12v'er, I cover just the radiator, no holes. I run just right all the way down to -60 that way. Then again my truck doesn't need a "brain" to run #ad
Leave my transmission cooler out in the wind along with the intercooler. For short in town runs I ocaisionally cover the transmission cooler.

I think removing the fan is the way to go,easy to do and the truck runs much quieter, probibly will give you better mpgs also. Still need to cover the front though.

hey folks,
I just need to know. Will blocking the rad. improve MPG?I am going to see if I have a piece of cardboard lying aroung this morning because the temps. are supposed to be dropping like a rock here today. Also what was the minimum size opening for the round hole in middle? Is it something like 10"dia. ?
Just curious. Oh I have the 5spd if this helps. Thanks,

Phil

I use one of these, as cool as 30's as hot as 50's, temps, egt and coolant yet to go out of bounds. (UNLOADED!) Also, it seems that covering as far forward as the grille wouldn't put as much strain on the fan clutch as covering the directly in front of the radiator w/o a hole.

granted this thing probably doesn't block cold air as well as the other winter masks that cover the radiator directly.

it's worked for me thus far, gets more than enough cool air from the bumper vents and used the heater or hot setting on vent.

Only gripe I have with the product are the "UNFINISHED" EDGES, I spent the better part of two hours filing and sanding so the sharp edges would not cut the monochromatic finish on my sport's grille.

Just my experiences, not meant to imply someone else would get the same results.

Good Luck

Phil,

Cut a piece 36" x 21" and cut out about a 9" hole from the center. I just made one up a few days ago. Hasn't seemed to help the MPG's at all but it does warm up faster and stay warm longer after you park it. Also helps out the block heater quite a bit.

Dave,
Thanks for the input. I thought it was something like that 9"or 10" round. I just was not sure. I cut a 10" hole in middle. See what it does. Oh by the way what panned out about the meeting up at Musselmans?I heard the GM wasn't to receptive to the idea as you stated in your email a few days ago. I would like a get together after the holidays. Maybe you can post it in the thread on the Local Events Forum.
Regards,

Phil
