my truck is stock except for a BHAF and missing cat and muff and stock plate and housing slid forward, what would happen if I blocked off the line for the wastegate to make more boost? to much boost? to high EGT's? thanks... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... .....

without engine modifications blocking the wastegate will be of np value infact there was a post awhile ago that stated it was a bad idea.

But I don't remember the reason

Blocking Off Wastegate!

The below was recently posted in thread 'torque plates'. Hope it helps. See no reason for concern as long as your EGT's remain below 1300 pre-turbo.

Just another data point. Prior to installing a TST #6 plate, last weekend, I took my stock plate and slid it "all" the way forward (did not increase slot lgt. ) as well as the AFC forward, 20 clicks in on the AFC starwheel. Checked adjustment on cam contour follower so it did not ride under plate. Also blocked off the turbo wastegate. I will use this as a baseline to the #6 plate performance.

Seat of the pants indicates off line response is much better, turbo spoolup comes on almost immediately, very little smoke, max. boost now hits 28 -30psig (vs 18 stock psig max) and EGT now max's @ 1250 (vs 950 stock). Govenor still stock, so defuel takes place at ~2700RPM. Mid range torque is greatly increased. Bottom line - vast improvement stock!!

racingfanscjww,

If you block off wastegate so it doesn't open pistons and turbo could be cooked.

Guages(boost/EGT) would be ideal to monitor engine boost/temp.

Our turbos have small compression tunnel to allow for fast build up of boost at low rpms. But at higher rpm this could cause problems, so a wastegate was added to allow exhaust to by pass turbo at high rpms. There are pros and cons on blocking the gate.

I think a adjustable or preset gate at higher boost would be better option. 30 lbs is all you mite get out of stock anyway, which should be no problem.

The wastegate is usually set at around 18 to 20 lbs.

thanks guys, I guess I need to wait till I get some guages before I starting messing with the boost. been trying to find things I can do without spending extra money, we just layed off some people here at the foundry, fortunately I'm salary and would be one of the last to go but its still scary. maybe I missed it but did any one catch what the optimum boost would be with a stock plate? thanks again... ... ... . one more question I have a 0-60psi guage that I got off a piece of equipment here at work (expensive guage) I was thinking of plumbing it into the cab temporarily so I could watch the boost, would a tubing kit for an oil pressure guage work?

racingfanscjww, A tubing kit for an oil pressure guage works just fine. Just get a 1/8 inch male fitting for the manifold and plumb it in right behind the pump.
