I'm wanting to do the blow-by bottle fix but I have a question or two before I begin. My plan is to remove the bottle and connect a hose long enough to extend behind the cab. I'm hoping to eliminate the odor, or at least direct it elsewhere and also make it easier to clean the bottle (big hands and arms don't fit into small spaces).

Anyway, my question. I've read others post that they've just run the new hose back along the frame and let it hang. Will that eventually drip oil? I don't want to have oil stains on the blacktop driveway.

Should I be concerned about keeping a consistant down angle to the hose (like I was doing a drain line in my house)?

Can I run one hose and risk kinking it where it makes the 90 degree bend or should I use a 90 degree elbow with straight sections of hose and hose clamps?

Thanks guys!

Eric,

I don't have any sharp bends in mine. Just replaced the short hose with a long one and ran it inside the frame rail to just infront of the rear wheel. I cut mine off so that it would end inside the rail just in case there was any oil drip it would not fall on the ground or driveway. So far there has been no sign of oil inside the frame rail. Just the normal collection of dirt and little rocks. My hose is clear so I can see if any oil collects inside in the area between the engine and the frame. So far so good. I think the 70MPH wind keeps the whole thing cleaner than I expected.

Eric-

I bought an adapter so that I could plug into the existing hose. I then purchased 5' of 3/4 inch heater hose and I maintained a level to downward angle as I ran the hose back along the frame. I don't think that you have to worry about it plugging up as it blows pretty good. Also, I think that any oil that does come out does so when you are running at the higher rpm's so you probably won't see any drips on the driveway--at least I never have. If you look at the set-up of the older trucks, they just point the hose down at the road too (no blow-by bottle).

On my 94 the tube is at the bottom of the engine. I attached a large tylenol bottle and when I change the oil I check/drain the bottle. My driveway stays clean now.

Eric;

Finished moving the blow-by outlet to exit next to the frame under the drivers seat about a week ago (got the idea from another posting). Basically cut the original tubing in half to preserve the original bend, used a 3/4" to 3/4" adapter and connected 6' of black heater hose. Used black tie wraps and first attached the hose to the ground cable and then to the red +12V cable leading back to the frame.

DC was nice enough to make numerous holes in the frame making hose attachment easy with long tie wraps. My outlet points down towards the rear tire. Have had it together for over a week and no drips. I see no reason that you can't attach the bottle to this setup if needed.

By the way, when I did this 15 minute relocation project, I also changed the engine oil to Shell Rotella (the worst one for smell). No more smell in the cab!! For an $8 fix it sure makes life better.

One other thing, it's amazing how much blow-by there is. My truck has 7,500 miles on it with 4K of that towing a 10,000# travel trailer. At an idle you can see the blow-by coming out of the hose. I just wonder how good that stuff is to breath with the original setup - even after the smell is gone.

It makes me happy to see the "ole blow-by bottle" is still newsworthy! It sure makes better reading than VA or VE or PE. Keep it up!

Just did a fix on the `ol pill bottle. Removed it altogether, bought 10`of 3/4" heater hose and a 3/4" hose barb fitting at NAPA auto parts. Connected the heater hose to the existing breather hose with barb connector, ran it down and along inside of frame rail. attached with tie straps, and used a 1/2" iron street ell and clamped the hose to the ell. attached a 4" long 1/2" pipe nipple to the ell and turns down just in front of fuel tank. This will solve the problem of oil mist all on frame and engine. This is a bad design by Cummins. Took a while to wipe all the oily mist from under my truck. I am really surprised at how much and how far the oil mist had accumulated on the truck. Can`t imagine a brand new truck with only 4800 miles looking so dirty. No more blowby bottle for me #ad

Just a couple of comments about my version of the long hose setup. I used a wire as a snake to pull the hose inside the frame rail from in front of the rear wheel to just opposite the starter. Then it goes from the frame to the blowby vent on the side of the engine. Since it goes under the starter there is no sharp bend when it turns up. There are NO connectors or clamps except for the clamp to attach the hose to the vent. The hose is completely out of the way with no sharp bends. I used a clear hose so I can see if any oil accumulation occurs. So far, so good.

My 99' didn't have a bottle - so I paid $10 for one from Cummins. With the black bottle you couldn't tell where the tube was. Sometimes the tube would be on the bottom - sometimes real close to the vent holes in the bottle. When near the vent holes the oil would be all over the bottle. Then one winter day - of which I have many - I removed the bottle and there was sludge in the bottom. I was concerned that the whole contraption could freeze and blow up my engine. So I threw away the OE bottle and went 20K miles naked. Then when I'd do an oil change or grease, I'd have more oil on my back and arms than the truck was getting. My solution was to extend the OE hose 5" and put an amber apothocary bottle on the end. Now I can see the tablespoon of oil that accumulates between ever oil change and only have to mess with it when the end of the tube extends below the oil line.

I took an empty Stanadyne Performance Formula Bottle, cut off the "neck", punctured three or four 1/2" holes around the outside of the bottle, about 1/2" from the top, then pushed it as far up the blow-by hose as I could. No more oil on the driveway, and I have a continuous replacement supply of the bottles. I think the reason people have so much problems with the pill bottle is because it is too small.
Good luck.

The Racor crankcase vapor filter is a slick looking unit. Just hook it to your blowby hose, run an oil return line to your crankcase, and wallah! --no more mess #ad
It collects blowby vapors and condenses them back into oil, which is filtered and returned to the crankcase. Supposedly is fairly low maintenance.

The $20 question: How spendy is it???

Funny stuff! On the Ford site, the boys are dreaming up ways to get their blow-by to vent to the atmosphere - just like ours does. Ain't nobody happy?

You brought up the very point that I was thinking of this morning. I was under the impression that it was a true gift that the Cummins was allowed an open breather system. Why are people so interested in trying to close it up? Back in highschool we all converted our closed breathers to open ones.
