I did another oil change today at 7000-miles. This time I noticed that the entire front of the engine was covered with oil residue and dirt. This included the fan blades and backside of the radiator-a real mess for a vehicle with such low mileage. Aside from that obnoxious smell after the oil change, I finally decided that it was time to reroute this thing. First of all, the tuperware bottle with the holes in it went into the garbage. I bought a 3/4" hose connector as I wanted to retain the original breather hose for the nice tight bends at the top. I then added a 5-foot section of 3/4" heater hose and routed it back along the engine grounding line and starter power lead. It then makes a jump over to the frame (with plenty of play) and at about the mid transmission point, it then points down at the street. Problem solved!

After warming up the engine and driving around with 11-quarts of new Delo400 I pulled over and examined the end of the breather extension. It was blowing thick blue clouds of oil vapor right down at the street where it belongs. I didn't realize that it would be so visible but this is what we are smellin' and continually wiping off of our engines. The original plan was to hang a "real" oil breather box off of the frame and attach the hose, but it seems to be working so well that I might just call the project finshed! No more smell and no more mess.

Good tip David! Where'd ya get the 3/4" connector?

In Felton there is a place called Ernie's Western Auto (P/N GAT 28605 for $2. 69). It is just a plastic fitting which connects the two hoses together. You can also buy the heater hose there for . 14-cents per inch. Hope the dog is feelin' better.

I didn't realize that this same topic was being discussed over at the "Engine/Drivetrain" forum. I guess that's what happens when you try to play by the rules.

dresslered,
I did the same thing to mine and everything seems normal. I will watch the area around my dipstick just to make sure I'm not getting any back flow from there. Do you know if adding the 3/4" hose will cause any additional backpressure due to the length of the hose?

Thanks,
Areon

JJY2K, you bring up a good point in which I hadn't given too much thought. I convinced myself that there was very little additional restriction between the 5' of additional hose that I added versus the original set-up that empties into the blow-by bottle (I am not using a blow-by bottle). Additionally, the coupler that I used is not clamped. I suppose if pressure was excessive, the coupler would pop off. I suppose that if there was still a concern, one could flare out the added hose to a 1-inch diameter. If you read the other topic as posted by ALPENLITE, the dealer extended his hose and also reinstalled the bottle. I suppose that some mad bomber is going to add a pressure guage to his blow-by bottle now...
