You use a device called a manometer. I have never used or seen one. do a search on here and/or Google to learn more. Yes it will give some indication as to the condition of the rings assuming you have no vacuum or turbo leaks putting added pressure in there.
I had a manometer test done by Cummins about 2 years ago. I had oil puking out the tail gate and blowby tube. It stopped but I took it to Cummins to test it to see if rings were bad.
The manometer was like a cloth sock thing about 4-5 feet long. They hooked it on the blowby tube and ran the engine at idle and 2000 rpm. It passed. I Had 1 inchs at Idle and 8 inchs at 2900 RPM (parked... not driven)
Max blowby is 16 inches @ W. O. T.
Cummins Diagnosis: leak possibly caused by overfilling oil.
