I know that this subject has been beat to death, so I hope you guys will humor me. I have stumbled across a 97, 12 valve, 5spd, club cab, 2 whl drive Ram. It starts O. K. (starter drags, reman. from ???) has a GOOD (big) blue puff on start up. Idles fine, runs strong to 2850-2900 rpm with no visible smoke.

However at idle after truck is warmed up, it smokes out of the breather tube. I know that a small amount would be normal and o. k. , but this truck "seems" excessive. The best way to describe it would be "it looks like you have pressured up the crank case to around 3 to 5 psi". Or, it looks like it does when it gets cold and they show the down linemen of a football game just before the ball is snapped and you can see their breath. Imagine that they never had to draw a breath in, and were always breathing out. This is about the volume that is coming from the tube.

My question is, what could be the cause of this excess pressure? I have been told everything from turbo seal to bad rings

P. S. When the dip stick is removed, there is no visible or feel-able (with your finger) pressure here. I know this is redundant, but looking for fresh ideas. Thanks

I don't know about "excessive", but mine does show a little vapor out of the vent tube. My truck does use/consume/blow-by about 2 qts during a 6-7K oil duty cycle. It's not going out the tailpipe, no leaks, so I guess that it's oil vapor that's venting out the tube.

Thanks guy's. Since it is sitting at a small town used car lot, I can't find out if it burns any oil. He has offered to let me take it to a mechanic, but I have to carve out the time for that. Thanks again. :D

The mileage is stored in the puter and the dealer can access it from the plug under the steering wheel to see if the mileage is correct. If it has a lot of blowby it has problems. My 97 has 172,000 on it and no blowby but the other truck had a lot of miles and blowby and used a lot of oil.
