I seem to be getting some oil around the bell hosing that is spreading down and starting to leak on the ground. ( not much but I hate oil leaks). I hope it is from the blowby tube. Any idea what causes this and does the breather need to be cleaned or replaced? I haven't popped the valve cover off yet to check it out, I am cleaning the existing oil off the motor to try and trace the leak. It doesn't appear that I am losing anything oil when I check the level. Anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks

While the engine is running remove the oil filler cap... . if there is a lot of air moving out of the oil filler cap... . it could be a sign of blow by... this is excessive air moving past the rings into the crankcase... . these engines do not have a problem with this... . unless the oil has been washed off by a bad injector or dirt has scored the side of the cylinder... .

Oil that is leaking around the bell housing could be from several locations... . 1 there is a group of holes in the block and head that oil passages and they are plugged with what the industry calls galley plugs..... one might be loose... . rear main seal would leak oil into the bell housing and out around it.....

Clean it off and what where it comes from... . Cummins has an additive that you add to the oil... . and than look at the engine with a black light... . where the oil leak will glow light green from the additive..... its a glow in the black light... ... . could also be yellow...

Hope this helps...

Thanks for the info. I don't think it is the rear main seal because it appears to be coming from a higher location. I hope to have the last remaining oil cleared off by the weekend. Any idea if you can get to these galley plugs without pulling the engine or transmission?
