At 102,000 my 03 "blew up". I was going down the hwy at 70 mph when my engine started making all kinds of racket and died. I got out to discover oil/ diesel running out the tail pipe. Dealer says the injectors on #3,5 stuck open flooding the cyls with diesel and i really should replace all six. chrysler told me NO WARRANTY, so 4,000. 00 later i have new injectors only to discover # 5 is knocking. Dealer says flooding cyl with diesel washed oil out and scorred cyl wall/piston, they need another 12,000 from me. When you unhook the wire to #5 injector knock stops but then engine smokes like crazy, i assume this is because with the injector killed there is no pressure in cyl to keep oil from getting past the scorred piston?. I could barely come up with funds to buy truck and this has me over a barrel, looks like i will try to over haul engine myself [another mistake?] ANY ADVICE?

AH, the joys of common rail - soooooo much better than them nasty, troublesome VP-44's...

Sorry to hear about your problem and at those prices, I'd sure be looking at ANY way possible to dump that truck against another one, Dodge or otherwise...

I think that before you go any farther, you need to contact chrylser's factory rep for your zone. There have been posts here in the past about members being 3-4000 miles past warranty and getting taken care of. There was obviously a problem with it before the warranty was up, the final damage was made evident shortly thereafter. Good Luck!

JRothgit, since injector failures are a known problem and that you're barely out of warranty, I'd be pushing them hard to cover at least half of the bill. . . if not all of it. A situation like this might justify an attorney if you're talking over $10,000 :(

You might call Chrysler too, at least get a paper trail started with them:

$4000 dollars for injectors is crazy. I'd pick up a new engine and stick it in. What year is the truck? I think fordcummins.com has a bunch of commonrail engines for sale fairly resonable. They are for sale on ebay as well, low miles.

Hey Gary, I'd rather be stuck rebuilding my commonrail or 12v than driving a 24v with a Vp-44. At least when you are done you can have a radical engine, the 24v with a VP-44 no matter what you do to it, it wants to die.

I had it chiped about 150 miles before it blew up[by my local chrylsler tech] i can't help but think it may have had something to do with putting more fuel to it, when warranty people were contacted this was not mentioned by my tech. Chryslers responce--- We believe the injector failure and subsequent engine failure was caused by fuel contamination which we are not responsible. The things i feel responsible about are possible fuel contamination and the engine oil was thinned out. I had always hads my oil changed at a quick oil change place and wander if they pay any attention to thinned oil and tell the customers??

For another motor their is one on ebay now or look at carparts.com several in AZ and TX from the batches that Fordcummins bought from for close to half the price they are asking.

That really stinks. You mention the oil was "thinned out". Did you notice it "making" oil (oil level gradually rising on the dipstick indicating fuel is getting into the oil)?

I've found that when I change my oil while the engine is still very hot it comes out fairly thin... I don't think that's necessarily a problem.

Yep, $6500 from fordcummins.com

And also, yes, push for your dealers Dodge Rep to lend a hand... That is bull that a cummins is shot after 103,000 miles

I don't know, but those engines have more crud and rust on them then my '03 does with 85k miles on it!! Did they sit outside somewhere for the past 2 years?? And no warranty? hmmmmm. .

So... . how many 53 owners has Chrysler helped that were over the warranty by months or miles?. Do not get your hopes up with them helping on anything, although it would be in their best interest to do so for public relations. Sorry for the dismal news but that is how corporate Chrysler is.

That doesn't seem to be a real concern for them. Given the way some here have been treated. Same goes for many other brands also.

You would think they care. Biting the hand that feeds you, isn't a good way of doing things.
