Blower Noise

After searching the threads I think I already know the answer to this question but I want to be sure before embarking on a project of this magnitude. When the fan is blowing on high (AC or Heat) it sounds like I am flying in a Cessna and the air movement feels weak. It will switch from defrost to main to floor but the noise remains and the air flow seems about half what it used to be. I am assuming it is the blend door issue and with summer right around the corner I need the AC to work at its best. It would be a bad summer at 105 degrees and 60% humidity with a weak AC.



I have read the thread about replacing the blend door housing, but I was curious as to when they started to put the upgraded unit into new trucks. I didnt think it was an issue with the '06 and later. I certainly dont want to spend the $800 for the dealer to do it but I am not looking forward to tearing my dash out. :{



If there are any other things I can check first I will investigate those first.

I'm afraid I don't have good news for you... . I have an 06 2500, and my blend door has broken as well as my fan motor has gone out. Take your pick, but if it was me, I'd take five minutes to loosen 3 screws on the fan housing, run it in your hand, then you'll know if it's the fan or the blend door. If it is the blend door, it can be taken out thru the fan hole, until you get it replaced, at least that fixes the airflow problem. Take note that in humid weather and cold weather, having outside air for defrost can be very necessary, I learned the hard way.

my 06 2500 did the same,the door falls on the blower. dealer replaced under warrenty 2 months ago. its an elbow piece. 1hr,25min. to fix it. FREE. check warranty. first. the piece costs under 50$ good luck pete.

Thanks, I will pull that fan out tomorrow and see if anything is obstructing it. Hopefully if it is something simple I can fix quickly.

Ok, so I pulled the motor out and found a small piece of plastic in the blower. I looked up through the hole and found that the recirc door was laying across the blower inlet. I was able to reach up in through the hole where I took the motor out and remove the door. It broke apart where the servo slides into the door. Is it possible to buy/repair the door and reinstall it without removing the whole dash and AC housing?



The material the door is made out of looks weak, there are stress cracks all over where the servo connects to the door. #@$%!



The AC will practically give you wind burn on high and gets cold now, but when it starts getting really hot and humid it may not work as well with no recirc option.

Unfortunately you have to replace the housing, about $25 part. The dash and HVAC does have to be pulled back to do it. A tech that has done a few can do them in about 45-60 minutes so they are not that bad, and there are a couple of short cuts. There was a good write up with photos a while back. The secret the techs use is to roll the dash back, more on the passenger side, then sneak the housing in without pulling the HVAC housing out. Sometimes you break one of the tabs, but it sure saves pulling it all out.

I read on one of the other diesel forums, where somebody explained that all you need to do is pull fan and glove box door and reach up w/left hand and change out door and hook up servo. I haven't got around to doing it but that's all I remember.

Its easy enough to get your hand up in there, but I dont see how you can change out the door without pulling the servo, which would require removing the housing. Maybe if you can flex the door enough to get it over the servo and then pop it into place on the other end, but it is a very tight fit, not sure it is possible.

I think you have to remove the blower to remove broken parts that end up there to make noise.
