I just couldn't resist turning up the radio to listen to the Doors properly. You guessed it the lousy factory speakers took a dump. I don't want to replace the whole system but I need suggestions for speaker upgrades. It is the rear ones that are bad.

Do this... .

I put boston acoustics speakers in and the rears take round 6" i think and the fronts are 6 x 9"

now the rear, you need to put the frame of the plastic speaker behind the speaker itself to not bottom out on the metal, then screw down, they have the 2 wire system for hookup... .

On the front, the 6 x 9 fits into the factory hole just fine but what the infinity system has is 2 small amps, one at each front speaker. This amp is bolted to the speaker. I unbolted it, then it has the 2 wire pull-offs for it too. Now when the amp is bolted to the speaker, the base of the speaker is the heat-sink for the amp so you need to bolt on some metal to the amp. Then hook up the wires to the new speakers and I used a zip tie to hold the amp up in the door-frame area to a brace or something.

This will make the system sound marginaly better, the amps i figure are not very powerfull so you might want to have a shop convert the big bulk of wires coming out of your stereo to RCA jacks so you can run it to a 4 channel amp and sub-woofer then to the speakers and it will then be a kickin' sound. I was quoted

$500 for the amp and conversion. add to that the sub and the enclosure which they make 2 kinds, one goes under the rear seat for 2 sub speakers, the other is a center seat replacement for 1 12" speaker (that's $500 in itself)

So what ever you want to do, I did the speakers for now, then I might do the conversion later.

Hope this helps

Eric

I posted an earlier comment on this. the best place to start is the deck. i would considera Pioneer nuit and they make one that fir right in the din and one half opening. My wife complained on the rear speakers from the day we bought the truck! I have finally replaced them all except the factory tweeters in the pillar. the rears i used an Infifnty compont system and in the fronts alpine 6x9". they are powered by a MTX 240Watt 4 channel amp and it sounds really good. the pioneer has 3 sets of pre-amp out-puts so I hooked up a under the rear seat MTX subwoofer system. That made a hugh diff. The rear speakers on the infifnty componet system fit right into the rear doors. they are a 5 1/2 inch woofer and a tweeter that I mounted on the reat door facing the front. Good Luck its easy to do, Dave:p

I beleive they are the same as the 98 which would be a 6". you can fit a 5 3/4 or 5 1/2 if you want. The componet set I put in have as much music power as the front 6x9's now. Before I changed them you never heard the rear speakers. Let me know what you decide. Dave:)

Guys, The crutchfield site is really good but they are way off when it comes to what fits in the doors. They state that the speakers have to been pretty thin don't remember the amount but you can put a much deeper speaker in there. There is lots of room. I havfe alpine 6x9 3way in the front and they are pretty big. Other wise Crutchfield is pretty good, the wire harness is really simple you just plug you stock wires into it and go! Dave

I replaced stock speakers with Eclipse front and rear. 6x9 in the front and 6 1/2's in the rear. The rears needed a little help from the Dremel but fit just fine. I have the Pioneer din and a half head unit and finished off the system with a 150w powered 8" Bazooka tube sub behind the passenger seat.

Anyone know if 6x9 speakers that are 3 1/4" deep will fit in the doors?

Thanks

I have the MMATs seperates in the front and planet audio 6" seperates in the back with a high end Clarion unit and it

sounds great.
