I have heard possibly a lift pump can cause this problem, can anyone confirm that? Truck only has 13,350 miles on it! I can imagine it is using oil all of a sudden. I change my oil every 3000 miles it is about due again. Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated!

What is your oil consumption?

Blue smoke at start up doesn't necessarily mean bad rings. It does however usually mean oil is burning. You could have a seal going in the turbo, a bad head gasket, a cracked head, cracked block, etc. etc. Bottom line at 13,500 miles, if it is from lube oil combustion, I'd take into the dealer and find out how good they are at warranty service.

Good luck,

Jon

Its not smoke. Its unburnt fuel from start up. Diesel is compresion ignition, meaning heat from compresion is what fires things up. When the engine is cold, not all the fuel is burnt in the combustion process, thats what the blue haze you see is all about. Its normal.

I've had the blue smoke since about 2500 miles. Started doing it for no good reason. It only does it on that first start of the day. After having the dealer say there is no problem and the guys on here saying it's ok, I just stopped worrying about it. At 22k it runs like a clock. I've grown to think that it looks kind of cool to see the smoke rolling out of the garage on that first start-up. Looks like the garage is on fire!:D By the way, it doesn't do it as much when the grid heater cycles or if the block heater has been plugged in. Also, mine doesn't use any oil.

Mine not using any oil either and only does it on the first start also so I guess I won't worry. I'm paranoid about that stupid lift pump guess I'm going to have to put on a gauge to get it out of my mind:D Bummer HA HA
